Ganguly Bashers, Chappell Backers and Offensively Biased Cricinfo Editors

I think it's pretty clear that Ganguly haters and Chappell backers have invaded Ganguly's wiki profile, and I am with BlessingsBoy on this - we will hit you back on Greg Chappell's profile if this continues. It is clear that Ganguly's haters (who for some reason always seem to come from a particular part of India), including possibly some of Cricinfo's offensively biased writers and editors, have left their temporary mark on SCG's wiki. And we won't just do it to Chappell; we'll do it to all of them - Gilchrist, Flintoff, and the rest of the players who have unfairly spoken out against SCG in the past. pmarley2 6 Nov 2008

It is written that he was criticized was media for taking off his shirt in the final of the 2002 Natwest Trophy. This language seems quite biased.Taking off shirt can never be a matter of criticism, soccer player often do this.Someone might say that he was replying to andrew flintoff who has done the some. But how can a player be criticized if he celebrates his memorable win in an unique style. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abhishekitmbm (talkcontribs) 06:51, 3 May 2011 (UTC) abhishek (talk) 06:55, 3 May 2011 (UTC)abhishekitmbm

POV: zimbabwe century

"Ganguly ground out a painfully slow century, against what is regarded as one of the weakest bowling attacks in international cricket"

while i think it is ok and fair to call zimbabwe one of the weakest bowling attacks - especially in conjunction with the phrase "regarded as"; it would be very value-loaded to use the term "painfully", which therefore is a NPOV violation. I therefore am changing it to "Ganuguly scored a century in 254 balls, which may be considered very slow by modern standards, against what is regarded as one of the weakest bowling attacks in international cricket". hope this is ok. Sam

Also changed the part in his biography which jumps straight from his 183 in taunton in the 99 WC to his being dropped cos of bad form in 2005... after all the small matter of 6 years, a world cup and two champions trophy final appearances, and about 10,000 internatioanl runs, cannot be ignored! - Sam

Another Ganguly

Say, wasn't there another Indian national cricket team player named Ganguly, who played during the 1970s and 80s? -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:18, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

There are no other international cricketers by that name. Saurav Ganguly has an elder brother by the name Snehasish who was a decent first class cricketer. But he got nowhere near the national side. Can you tell anything more about the person you are looking for ? Tintin 21:24, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
Nope, sorry, it's just a dim memory. Perhaps it was a different spelling. I was considering making Ganguly a disambig, and looking for names to disambig. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:37, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

ambidextrous

Is he actually ambidextrous ?? Just coz he bats left handed and bowls right handed, doesnt make it so ... ??

pov

Hmm - isn't it a bit contradictory to in the same article refer to him as humble and shy but also temperamental and controversial? No evidence being cited either way this is not encyclopaedic, boys! Autumnleaf 23:00, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Agree and nor is it NPOV. IMHO, all such references to behavior do not add much to the article and can be removed safely. btw, the way you say "Boys" has given away your secret identity. You are Azhar!! --Gurubrahma 07:00, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
Silly you!!! WRONG sex! ;o) Meanwhile I have entered the fray and done some tiny editing. Faintly hilarious double meaning was lurking - just look at my changes. Incidentally, the article looks fine and the NPOV should go, no? Autumnleaf 23:07, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
It still seems a bit POV to me, although I'm not familiar enough with the subject to know for sure what is universally accepted and what is disputed. Stephen Turner 08:40, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Removed passage

I removed this passage:

In ODIs, S C Ganguly made 22 centuries, out of which, INDIA has won 18 matches. If you compare with the other players in the world of Cricket, very few have this record.

and replaced it with this:

His number of centuries in ODIs is only exceeded by Sachin Tendulkar.

The reason I did this is that his number of centuries is superb, but his team's record when he gets a century is not that unusual: if a player gets a century in an ODI, usually his side wins. Even in a weak side, Brian Lara has 19 centuries, and the West Indies have won 16 of those. Sachin Tendulkar has 28 wins and one no result out of 38, which is slightly worse but not much. Aussies do even better, of course. Adam Gilchrist has 12 wins out of 12. Stephen Turner (Talk) 11:51, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Name Issue

Is his middle name Chandidas? As far as I know, Chandidas is the name of his father, and Bengalis do not have the tendency to include their father's name as middle name.

Cricinfo says Chandidas, at least. Stephen Turner (Talk) 15:20, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

You are right, Chandidas is his father's name. Look up his brother, Snehasish - there, too, his father's name is used as a middle name. Bengalis almost never write their patronymic as a middle name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.232.75.33 (talk) 13:51, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Please note that we, Bengalees, do not use our father's name as our middle name. Therefore it is only Saurav Ganguly & Snehasis Ganguly. Also , Saurav Ganguly lives in a place called Behala which is within postal & municipal limits of Kolkata.

Issue with Chapel

Half a page to describe the spat Ganguly had with Greg Chapel! Isn't that overrated?

- well, considering that that spat may have led to the end of his career, i would consider it important.

- kyrsch.

Trying to get to NPOV

-->There's way too much on this article which doesnt meet wikipedia standards.

->'Ganguly's international cricket career could be bisected into 2 halves...'

The section is too long for no good. It's almost a jab at Ganguly.

Well I couldnt stand it. The article for one of the most visited pages of a cricketer read like fanmail. So I have with whole lot of daring( maybe ts the five cups of coffee in me speaking!) removed a few passages & tried to bring it to NPOV. I havent removed any Data but have removed statements like "He has been credited in findiang many talented youngsters in the team", "His record in Test Cricket & ODI's is good" & "Ganguly is known for hitting big sixes". Such statements though appear to be true have no citation & are the reason for the neutrality dispute on this article. Hopefully my changes will be accepted. Srikeit 01:15, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Just a suggestion but maybe you should get rid of all the content which explains the downfall of Ganguly. It takes the article to a debatable stage which can be avoided. Providing content of his cricketting days as a player and then as a captain should be sufficient but you need to conjure a good ending just touching the surface of the present controversy he is in.
Works that need to be carried out:
  1. Needs a complete revamp. There is no continuous flow of matter.
  2. Need to avoid statements like this - He has also been credited with helping transform the Indian players into a vibrant team with an excellent team spirit.
  3. Not the least, the controversy he is at the moment
Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 12:22, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
I disagree, I think the ending of his captaincy and (perhaps) international career is very important. But it has to be written in a neutral way, and it appears to be impossible for most people to do that! Stephen Turner (Talk) 13:06, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
I agree that the article needs major cleanup, and also could do with some expansion. His cricketing career (the high points) seem to be described in a hurry (well, compared to the section on his downfall). His spat with Chappel is very important, still his achievements deserve a better treatment as well. I tried to expand his achievements but was foxed by how to put a good enough structure to it. Also the article is full of statements like "in the current series" or "in the last season". Such temporal statements should be replaced to something like "in the <seriesname> series". I changed some, but there may be more. --Soumyasch 17:57, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Srikeit for removing statements like Ganguly has exceptional record as captain. While editing yesterday, I thought these opinion-expressing statements were contibuting to the non-neutrality of the article. But since almost all paras start with these and they are there for quite sometime now, I thought may be they were necessary to introduce the para. So instead of removing them, I ended up adding one such line!!! Its good to see someone else who thinks like that. I wont fall for such confusion again. Thanks for that. --Soumyasch 06:24, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Test Score

The number of runs scored by Ganguly in tests is not some 10221 but much rather 5221. His average is also 40.78 and not 58. He has taken 26 test wickets(not 25). Did the relevant editing. (Source Cricinfo.com) Hp filter 10:36, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Gaurav Konar.

Removing NPOV tag

ganguly current test average is 43.58.Finally after a long time this article seems to confirm to NPOV. I have removed some of the subtle NPOV violations & now the article looks ready to lose the tag. What do you think?

Thanks

Srikeit(talk ¦ ) 01:04, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

I agree, well done. Stephen Turner (Talk) 07:36, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

The International Career section (in biography), which speaks of his achevements, is very short compared to the Controversies. While I do not say that Controversies be pruned, I do think Intl Career seems as if rushed through and added as an afterthought. Ieeds to be expanded to include more of his achievements. Else the Biography tends to be bit negative. --Soumyasch 07:44, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

I have removed the NPOV tag! Never thought this day would come for the Sourav Ganguly article! Anyway about Soumyasch's concerns I think what you say is true. The criticisms do outweigh the achievements by a bit, but that is not a strong enough topic for this article to continue deserving the tag. Although it would be very helpful if you or anybody else can add to the achievements. But be careful though, we do not want text added to balance NPOV to violate it again!
Thanks
Srikeit<spfeel "expandsect" needs to be put in International career section, for reasons explained above. --Soumyasch 12:05, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

I agree. I have done it.

Recent edits

Some recent edits have been, albeit informative, in violation of NPOV. I have done some cleanup of the section & looks like the POV issue has been solved. I hope these recent edits will not give this article the dreaded POV tag I have worked so hard to remove. *sweats & pants*

Intl Career

Ganguly began his career in international cricket in 1992, where he was dropped from the team for his bad form. For another four years he struggled to come back into contention. Finally in 1996, Ganguly was given a place in the Test side which Ganguly capitalised upon & scored his first Test century on debut at the historic ground of Lords. He later proved to be a prolific one day run scorer and also a formidable and dependable test player.

I would say the italicized portions are not netral in point of view. And also regd the first italicized statement, it should not be said he was dropped because of bad for - he was just allowed to play in one match, in which he didn't score notably. But failure in one match cannot jusify lack of form. I would suggest the rewrite for these parts as follows:

Ganguly is god of international cricket — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.99.180.220 (talk) 08:04, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

Sourav Ganguly made his international debut against Australia in India's tour of Australia in 1992. He didn't score much (can be replaced with his actual score) and was dropped from further matches. Four years later ("following a good domestic redord" can be added but I am not sure), he was recalled into the national side for a test series against England in England. He made his test debut at Lords, and scored a century in that match and repeated the feat in the match which followed. He was retained for the One day team and he went on become a player in both forms of the game'''

I am putting it up here and not on the main article because the issue is too sensitive. Its too tough staying objective when speaking of Sourav's achievements. Please transfer it to the article to replace the part in question, if you feel this is better.

--Soumyasch 18:24, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry for the NPOV violating edits. It feel it often happens that when you try to lessen the POV of flagrant NPOV violations, the end result also subtly violates NPOV. Anyway your reworded edit looks fine to me (except for a typo) & if you feel it should be posted, Be Bold! & post it. It has been written by you so the edit credit should go to you.

Srikeit(talk ¦ ) 18:34, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Done. Thanks. --Soumyasch 18:43, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey, someone should add his feats against Pakistan in Toronto to the page. That was an important performance in the sense, it was then when Ganguly really made it to the same strata as the Tendulkars and the Kapil Devs.

I agree - i think it was a world record, wasn't it? 4 man of the matches in a row? it would be a significant highlight of his career

Recent addition of POV and OR

Ganguly was nick-named as the Prince of Kolkata by Geoffrey Boycott

Why was this removed. It is true?

however as critics rightly point out, Australia's bowling was not potent enough as they missed their two top bowlers Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee for that match.

It is deliberately draeing attention to one way of interpretation, thus not POV.

thanks to his deputy Rahul Dravid who scored an amazing 23% of the total runs made by India in those 21 wins

Thanks to? Its blatant POV!!

Sourav Ganguly's 10 year international career could be easily bisected into 2 halves, the pre and the post 2000 eras. The significance of the year 2000 lies in the fact that the ICC introduced the one bouncer per over rule in ODIs starting from that year. Sourav Ganguly who averaged 45.5 from 1996-2000 suddenly found himself at the receiving end of the bouncer rule as his average plunged to 34.9 between the 5 year period 2001-2005. Also, against Test playing nations(which included Zimbabwe and Bangladesh), his average in the period plunged further down to 30.66 and he could score only 6 centuries between 2001-2005, of which 3 centuries were against Kenya & 1 was against Namibia. This sudden drop in his ODI average(to 30.66) against Test playing nations after 2001 was clearly a result of the short pitch stuff he had to encounter from opposition bowlers.

Do I even need comment on this?

Its the perfect way to get NPOV tag slapped back on the article. --soumসৌমোyasch 08:35, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

I dont see anything wrong, as long as it backed by statistics. And this fact is too imporatant to ignore, because it affected his career in a lot of way.

I disagree - to infer that these were the reasons for his drop of form would be an opinion - not a fact; the article is not just providing the facts but concluding from it. His fall in performance could have happened for any other reasons - captaincy, tough tours etc. therefore i still think it a blatant POV - Sam.

Cleanup: Things to be done

  • The various sections need to be reorganized and rewritten. Right now, it is completely statistical oriented, having primary sections for Centuries, Statistics, Records. The "international career" is heavily loaded with almost all the text is filled in one single section, which needs to rewritten in its entirety.
  • Initial/Early life section is required to cover his childhood cricket playing/learning/influences
  • Domestic career
  • International career - Evenly distributed right from Debut till 2007 world cup, having appropriate subsections.(might need to be split into couple of sections)
  • Personal life and hobbies.
  • Controversy
  • Statistics - Centuries, records, captaincy records etc.
  • Man of the matches/ Man of the series etc.
  • Appropriate templates such as Indian captaincy template, various world cup squads etc.

Having a picture in the infobox is an advantage in this article. Once all these major cleanup activities are done, the article can be considered for moving towards peer review. - KNM Talk 01:23, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Chappell fans/ Ganguly haters should know that their opinion is unwanted in this article. If you continue to spam, we will spam back the Greg Chappell article.

We are not removing the information about ganguly's poor form and lack of fitness but you should know, this is not an article where you can expres your hatred for Ganguly. An enclyclopedia article should not be a place of critical discussion.

Blnguyen, you are the lead of the spammers. Since you are from Adeleide, its quite understandable. We forgive you. Next time you revert back to your Chappellish-version, we will send a request to IP ban you. This is your final warning.

Blessingsboy 22:34, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Dear Blessingboy: Few things. There is no Chappelish version or something like that here. Apparently, there are no spammers here. Please assume good faith on other editors, and look forward to improvise the article.
Statements such as "we will spam back the Greg Chappell article" are uncalled for. No one is allowed to disrupt the Wikipedia to prove a point. Let us keep in mind, Wikipedia is not a battleground.
Last but not the least, please refrain from making personal attacks, like you have made above by calling names such as "lead of the spammers". Personal attacks are harmful for the project.
Coming back to the topic, the article needs much much more constructive work, in fact almost-complete rewrite. I have proposed some points above, as part of the major cleanup. If you have inputs / feedback on that please provide. We will need to work on those items one after the other, to bring the article into a good shape. Cheers, - KNM Talk 23:41, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Retirement from International Cricket

Just reading this section makes me think this wikipedia article is manipulated by Ganguly bashers. He had a very good farewell, but this section of the article does not refelct that, rather deals with selective media 'rumors'. He made 87 and 0 in his last test and both should be mentioned. He made good contributions with bat in the series and the average was good. He made a century, his second against Australia. And he was well honored by the teammates, the administrators and the media.

EZoha (talk) 11:42, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

You're right that the section does seem biased, mentioning only his duck as controversy about his selection. It's worth noting that he scored 324 runs at 54 in the four match series. For anyone improving the article in future, this link looks useful. Nev1 (talk) 11:57, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Clarification of unsupported gossips

  • Why is the Nagma Episode finished with a suspicious comment "something he denied"?
  • What was Nagma's point of view? Did she denied also?
  • Whether it was a mere gossip of tabloids/news paper or attached with firm evidences?
  • Why did the citation of this relationship didn't last long even in peoples gossip?
  • Wasn't the reporting too murky in all sense and unbelievable?
  • Which front-line News Paper seriously covered it? Which credible national/regional media aired this story? As far as I know there was no one to give this news any importance. For a scandal of this level isn't it quite unexpected??
  • And whether the source of informations were entirely few rubbish online Gossip sites and/or those dirty popularity seeking authors making living by exploiting celebrities.
  • For any scandal like this a national news paper is a better credible source than any book. Why link of a related article from any national news paper is not given instead?

This things needs to be clarified before bringing a gentlemen into disrepute. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.201.106.164 (talk) 06:05, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

{{edit semi-protected}} Saurav Ganguly : change birth year to 1973 from 1900 source: http://www.souravganguly.net/biography.htm

Skmdazam (talk) 19:15, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Cricinfo and CricketArchive.com both say 1973, why should souravganguly.net (which is unofficial) take precedent? Nev1 (talk) 19:34, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Not done: I concur with Nev1; the two sources xe mentions meet Wikipedia's guidelines on reliable sources, while Skmdazam's does not. If there is a reliable source that indicates 1973, then we can list both. Qwyrxian (talk) 01:23, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Currently he is in Pune Warriors squad, but before he was in Kolkata Knight Riders (2008-2010) squad. It should be mentioned in the v.d.e section.

Not done: this is already mentioned in the article. If by "v.d.e section" you mean one of the navboxes at the bottom of the article, I don't see where that information would fit in any of them. — Bility (talk) 18:25, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

IPL stats

IPL is becoming a well known and accepted by all cricketing body officials tournament. Its been influential for every form of cricket.Given that first class stats are added in any cricketer's page,IPL's stats must not be considered as untouchable!!! --abhishek (talk) 10:43, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

We donot give excessive emphasis on any particular tournament and so the page doesnot reflect Ganguly's IPL match scores as his only credentials. As for IPL becoming influential, that is your POV without any source. Unacceptable, and I strongly suggest you read WP:UNDUE. — Legolas (talk2me) 11:06, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Ganguly played 41 IPL matches, about 6% of his career. Including the stats on that competition alone inflates the importance of it way beyond proportion. Nev1 (talk) 11:10, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
That doesnot virtually guarantee a separate section with match-by-match analysis, runs and a table being added in the article. As I said, WP:UNDUE plays a strong point here. We should discourage people from turning an article into those found probably in blogs, fansites etc. The 2008-present section talks about the IPL and KKR appointment. Some of those statistics can be included as a part of the prose there and anybody with proper sourcing is welcome to do it. Case in point here would also be the Ganguly Chappell controversy. Although it has its own article, a part of it in brevity is included here, but not a case-by-case, answer-upon-answer of the throwbacks between the two. Third party notability gives emphasis on it more. — Legolas (talk2me) 11:17, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

All stats have been well verified and referenced as well--abhishek (talk) 11:25, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

They may be correct, but that's not the point. The point is they are simply not important enough to include in the article as it places undue emphasis on the IPL. Nev1 (talk) 11:27, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict)You completely missed my point. I never said that unsourced content has been added. I have issue with the undue importance being given here in his biography. — Legolas (talk2me) 11:28, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Just checked wayne rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo page..amazed to see club stats there also year by year, club by club, league by league have been mentioned well.IPL has same format as EPL.Hope you wouldn't deny this.So what is the point for not adding club stats for their counterparts in cricket!!!!--abhishek (talk) 11:37, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

What happens on those articles does not effect this one. Adding statistics for a single domestic competition is completely out of proportion. Nev1 (talk) 11:39, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Those two articles are the definition of WP:UNDUE. And just so you know, we donot encourage WP:WAX here. Just because one article has it, that doesn't mean that others will have it too. Guidelines are pretty important and I donot understand why you aren't reading them instead of asking the same question. — Legolas (talk2me) 11:42, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

How exactly is this true?Tournament must not be considered as being domestic, national, international.Though it should be considered according to its influence on sport itself. If we are talking about Sport and sportsperson then how most influencing tournament's stats(specially EPL) can be kept away.95% time there is club football only.I am not being biased or conflicting WP:UNDUE in mentioning that IPL is doing same to cricket.--abhishek (talk) 11:56, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Maybe you missed what I said earlier, but Ganguly played about 6% of his matches in the IPL, a tiny proportion of his career and if you factor in the hours spent playing cricket it diminishes even further. As I said, adding stats for a single domestic tournament in the context of Ganguly's entire career is skewed. Nev1 (talk) 12:06, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
I've read that. But tell me what if a player has played 95% time test and only 5% time ODI.Would you argue that his ODI stats would not be included for the sake of minority!!!!Its game format which matters not % days or time.--abhishek (talk) 12:12, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
I would say that including his ODI stats but not his Test figures would be ridiculous, which is analogous to what you are suggesting should be done here. Nev1 (talk) 12:14, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Not saying to include his IPL stats and omit ODIs and tests.Just mentioning that IPL stats must be included specially for a cricketer who has had Captain's cap twice and whose IPL carers spans for 4 years.Favors the same for other cricketers.--abhishek (talk) 12:26, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Your actions do not match your claims; you added a stats table on the IPL to an article without any such tables at all, thereby placing all the emphasis on one domestic T20 competition. That is not a situation that is sustainable. Nev1 (talk) 12:33, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
All the runs and wickets of test and ODI has mentioned well in personal Information section. It is the most important aspect of his career. But certainly IPL is not worth missing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abhishekitmbm (talkcontribs) 12:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Then add a sentence in the appropriate place about how many runs he scored. The format you chose was inappropriate. Nev1 (talk) 12:43, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Using this and this as sources, how about something along the lines of

In 40 matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders Ganguly scored 1,031 runs and took 8 wickets.

It could go at the end of the 2008–present: Kolkata Knight Riders, retirement and come back in IPL section and summarises things without the sprawling table which highlighted a minority of Ganguly's career. Nev1 (talk) 13:16, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes I agree with Nev1's suggestions that something along the lines of what he quoted is completely plausible and can surely be included in the said section. Abhishekitmbm, you are still not clear about issues of undue importance given and why we are opposing your idea of adding a table. I hope you went through WP:UNDUE thoroughly. — Legolas (talk2me) 13:35, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
I am not adhering to adding the table. My only point is not to ignore significant amount of career time of Ganguly. In addition to what Nev1 says all the field like "Matches Inns Not Out Runs HS Ave 100 50 Ct St" in one row and their values in next row would make it elaborative and confined at the same time.A additional line mentioning that he is playing season 2011 with PWI would conclude it.--abhishek (talk) 13:43, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

I've undone this edit because I'm not convinced that it is his official site. It seems to be a fan club/unofficial site, judging by the lack of actual input from Ganguly himself (or his management team), the fact the twitter feed it links to is SCGanguly_FC [fan club], and the facebook page clearly says:
"About
This is the official Page of www.scganguly.com. This is a Page run by some Fans not Sourav himself."
Seems quite definitive that this isn't official; as such, I've reverted and removed the link because it doesn't comply with WP:FANSITE. If I'm mistaken, please give me a shout. Ta. Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 16:27, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Edit Request: "Stringly Condemned" for Natwest 2002

The article says twice that Ganguly was "strongly" condemned for taking off his shirt at Lord's. However, the only reference to any criticism on the web I can find is an article in the Telegraph (Kolkata) using exactly the same wording as this article. No reference to an actual "strong condemnation" seems to exist. I would recommend deleting this claim unless a reference to an actual "strong condemnation" (or any condemnation at all) is added. 75.18.220.193 (talk) 22:33, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

"He was soon the subject of media criticism after an unsuccessful stint for county side Durham and for taking off his shirt in the final of the 2002 Natwest Trophy" .... really? Because Ganguly's shirt taking off incident is considered, in India atleast, a heroic act.. something which he is respected and remembered for. From what I remember, this was a fitting reply to Flintoff's shirt taking of incident in India....There must have been a small insignificant news channel in the UK, which grabbed the editor's attention, hence causing him to make am incorrect general statement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.169.12.142 (talk) 07:03, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Edit request 13 January 2013

Source 128 I have looked up the book in question for this source of comments and quotes. Page 32 of the 2006 Almanack is about how Philip DeFreitas and David Capel failed to be the next Botham. It is page 3 of 4. It is written by Peter Hayter. There is an electonic copy found here: http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/248047.html

Source 123 Page 45 is about the rise of Islam within the Pakistan cricket team, the second page of 'With Allah on their side' In the book, page 45 is the second of this three-page article. Again, this is not written by Engel, but appear in a book edited by him. http://www.espncricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/content/story/252265.html

If required I am happy to scan these pages to verify that this is what they are.

I would suggest that these supposed comments/quotes by Matthew Engel be immediately removed. It seems quite clear that these comments have been fabricated as they have poor syntax and the use of words may indicate autotranslate or a non-native speaker of English.

I hope these supposed quotes don't appear elsewhere, with another journalist as the 'supposed' source.

Matthew Engel is not an 'ICC sport critic' which makes it sounds as if he is an official journalist working for the ICC. Engel has had two stints editing Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, and he has held a number opinions against the ICC. In other words he has criticized the ICC. Whoever has used this moniker 'ICC sport critic' has either blurred the distinction between ICC and Wisden, or has noticed a headline with 'Engel' 'criticize' and 'ICC' and got very confused. Furthermore the ICC (which stands for International Cricket Council) is only about cricket, not about any other sports, and so the concept of 'ICC sport' is one error below being even a tautology.

The quotes do not bear his style at all. Secondly there are syntactical pointers to suggest these are fabricated quotes weren't written by anyone with English as a first language. 'By' rather than 'with' before 'instigating...' is usually what is used - 'with' here very unusual and not even something an old-fashioned person would say and so 'with here is just very poor syntax. 'mal-decisions' is not a word, but appears to be a word generated from autotranslate. 'Counter-pose' is almost never used outside the context of describing dance steps or acting. 'Behaviours' is not something people 'instigate' - the object of this verb is usually more solid or tangible than that. A moment's reflection on the imprecision of 'behaviours' being 'limitless' show how poorly thought through this supposed quote can be. It is unlikely to the point of impossibility that any professional journalist would have expressed this, let alone one as experience as Matthew Engel.

Finally although 'effing' might appear suitable as a comment this seems very unlikely. Engel's written words are at the very least professional, and would not include something like this; he won't exactly Bowdlerise, but any journalist worth his salt can make his point clear, and in strong terms, without using such words. On the other hand, if this be something that is said then Engel would actually have used the swear word being skirted around. 'Effing' is too tepid for a direct spoken quote and too childish for a written quote.

I believe that the community consensus is not to add Indic scripts to articles under the India project, other than the geography related ones. Unfortunately, one contributor, User:বিজয় চক্রবর্তী, in spite of being told about this, has been on a spree adding Bengali scripts to numerous articles. When his edits are reverted, he gets in to an edit war mode. A clear guideline on this will be highly appreciated. Thanks. Shovon (talk) 08:10, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

I have added Bengali script names only to articles of the people who are natively Bengali people, as I also referred to articles of other people carry their native language. for Example Russian people or Japanese people articles contain their native name in their language in (brackets), (Please also Refer to WP:MOSBIO). And Indic scripts are only not to be added when an articles relates inclusion of all the language of India, making the article bulky with so many languages like geographical (e.g Indian Ocean) or any other type of article (e.g. India, Sonia Gandhi, Government of India, Manmohan Singh etc...), It does NOT include articles like (West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy, Robindronath Tagore, Debendranath Tagore, Keshub Chunder Sen etc...) which are native language/ language specific! বিজয় চক্রবর্তী (Bijoy Chokroborti) 08:33, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
We are not dealing with Wikiproject Russia or Japan here! According to the community consensus in Wikiproject India, "There is community consensus that the lead sentence of an article should not contain any regional or Indic language script. It is suggested that IPA be used for help with pronunciation. For details, refer to this RfC: Native languages in lead." You can add Bengali language in any of the Bangladesh related articles, but NOT, in articles covered under Wikiproject India. Shovon (talk) 08:52, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
I understand that we are not dealing with any other Wikiprojects here, But according to the meaning of Native scripts lead on Wikiproject India, You are not supposed to add Indic scripts when an articles relates inclusion of all the language of India, making the article bulky with so many languages like geographical (e.g Indian Ocean) or any other type of article (e.g. India, Sonia Gandhi, Government of India, Manmohan Singh etc...), It does NOT include articles which are native language/ language specific! (e.g. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy, Robindronath Tagore, Debendranath Tagore, Keshub Chunder Sen etc...) (for example If you bring Wikiproject India terms on Indian related geographic articles also, then none of the India related article shall contain any other language than English!) I hope it was clear to understand! বিজয় চক্রবর্তী (Bijoy Chokroborti) 09:14, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
Which part of "There is community consensus that the lead sentence of an article should not contain any regional or Indic language script. It is suggested that IPA be used for help with pronunciation." is not clear to you? Shovon (talk) 09:20, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
You please understand the meaning of the following previous post "regional language is different from the native language": You are not supposed to add Indic scripts when an articles relates inclusion of all the language of India, making the article bulky with so many languages like geographical (e.g Indian Ocean) or any other type of article (e.g. India, Sonia Gandhi, Government of India, Manmohan Singh etc...), It does NOT include articles which are native language/ language specific! On the offside, first there is God, then Sourav Ganguly. –Rahul Dravid
We have a young talented side. They have found a good captain in Sourav Ganguly.–Indian cricketing legend Mustaq Ali
He is a wonderful batsman and definitely the best captain that India can have. So far he has surpassed my expectations and continues to do so. You rarely come across people like Sourav, he is different, he is special, there can be just one Sourav Ganguly.–Indian cricketer Arun Lal
Sourav’s greatest asset is his ability to communicate. He is a naturally very confident person. He encourages his team, is a great motivator and a born captain. He is not the media’s blue eyed boy because he is a very straightforward person, who never minces his words, instead he talks in a no nonsense manner to the press. He shares an extremely healthy rapport with his teammates. His leadership skills are also vouched for by the youngsters in the team. He has phenomenal brand value. He’s the new-age Indian, an aggressive go-getter, full of self-belief, determination.–Ravi Shashtri
Ever since Sourav became the captain, I do not feel like a youngster in the team any more. Everybody is treated equally and Sourav himself is extremely approachable and a pillar of strength. Sourav stood by me when I was struggling. I owe a great deal to him for standing by me at the most important time. I can’t express my gratitude to him in words.–Harbhajan Singh
He is the first one to encourage us when we perform well. He is firm but he is fair. He is a very tough and aggressive captain, who is on all accounts, a team man, one who backs his players. Off the field, he is very easy and approachable. He also shows a great interest in all his juniors and their game. When I wasn’t selected for a particular tour of England, Sourav personally called me up and told me how he too had gone through a bad patch and then things had improved for the better, just as they would for me.–Deep Dasgupta
The Bengal tiger always has his tail up, ready to devour the opposition.–Navjot Singh Sidhu
Sourav is really the best captain India has ever had.–Sunil Gavaskar
Besides football, the only other game I ever took interests in was basketball, but never cricket. Sourav is the sole reason why I am a cricket lover today. He has worked very hard to reach the position he is in today and that makes him really admirable.–Best-known footballer and captain of Indian Football team, Baichung Bhutia
I captained Sourav in the East Zone. He was a majestic player. I have not seen anybody play a cover drive as well as Sourav. He is very busy, nevertheless, he is so approachable that one will always find the youngsters of the team crowding around him and discussing cricket and swapping strategies.–Former domestic cricketer Saba Karim
I have known Ganguly as a quiet lad, who always respected the seniors and lent an ear to any advice that came from them. This was the quality that impressed me most in this determined cricketer and I was not averse to giving him a break as early as possible.–Mohammed Azharuddin
Sourav’s best quality is that he has the ability to remain unperturbed even when he faces severe criticism.–Javagal Srinath
The great thing about Sourav is that he doesn’t let any criticism bother him. He is his own man, and an intensely determined one. He always speaks his mind. His batting is a unique mix of touch and power. When he plays those drives, it’s all touch, all elegance. Timing is his gift. He has the ability to not only clear the ropes but even the stadium. Against spin, my god, he is really a murderer! One thing I’d love to have from his game is his the ability to clear the ropes. As a captain, he is always encouraging his batsmen, reminding them of past successes. Sourav is among the best one-day players I have seen.–VVS Laxman
There is nothing wrong with his captaincy. He has marshalled his troops quite well and moulded the side into a winning outfit in the last few years. –Syed Kirmani
“Outsiders don’t understand the feeling of our people, the kind of respect we have for these players. I think that he made a comeback and proved himself all over again made it clear that he should not have been thrown out in the first place. He made a point and proved people wrong,” -Kapil Dev
Sourav has given them [the Indian team] that confidence and ability to target teams or individuals at key times.–John Buchanan, Australian coach

Sourav has got a huge role to play in Indian cricket and its success. I hope certainly that he gets back in there because he is a hell of a good player and he still has got too much to offer to Indian cricket.- Allan Donald (when dada was out of team)
He has got a lot of runs and we have a huge respect for him.- Graeme Smith

A quality batsman. There are a couple of things I like about his batting. He is right up there on my list, as far as offside play goes. The other thing he excels at is his use of feet to spinners. He keeps his head down, has nice footwork and a lovely long follow-through. I really enjoy it when he comes down the track to spinners. In fact, you can safely bet that it would go for a six. — Ian Chappell
Sourav has done an excellent job of balancing his captaincy with his personal game. He looks like he is enjoying being captain. And effectively, he has lightened the burden on Sachin Tendulkar.-Dave Whatmore
He is a brilliant player and definitely a force to reckon with! –Wasim Akram

In the introduction section it is mentioned that sourav ganguly is the "honorable" president of the west bengal cricket. That 'honorable' should be avoided. Jibincjose (talk) 11:24, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
