As long as you don't have upcoming events with dates and locations (they are sort of advertisements), this article should be fine.— Preceding unsigned comment added by AlexGraal (talkcontribs) 22:52, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Too Promotional?[edit]

NewYorkActuary, my intent was to provide more information as to what Skepticamps are and how they are different from large-scale conferences. Can you suggest a better way to do that? Proper Stranger (talk) 23:35, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that quote is too promotional. It is a comment by a notable person on the atmosphere of a skepticamp. Maybe you could refer to the podcast but not include the quote in the WP. 8==8 Boneso (talk) 09:22, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Proper Stranger and Boneso: Thanks to both of you for weighing in here. When this article was nominated for deletion a few months back, one of the initial concerns was its promotional tone (you might recall that a large-sized video clip dominated the article at the time it was nominated). And so, I deleted the quote because I saw it as taking the article back towards the conditions that led to its deletion nomination. Specifically, it was a lengthy quote and not just a lifting of a succinct phrase or two (such as is commonly done in reviews of films, etc.) Also, the tone of the quote was unencyclopedic (and, to my ears, promotional). But on top of all that, the quote was from a keynote speaker at one of the events, so it was hardly an independent assessment of the event (and lack of independence is also an aspect of promotionalism).

I like Boneso's idea of bringing the podcast in as a reference and, to that end, I drafted the following sentence that could be used as a final stand-alone paragraph in the Events section:

The keynote speaker at the YEAR event in PLACE was Ben Radford.[1]

I didn't take the time to listen to the entire podcast, so one of you will need to specify the year and venue. Also, the footnote should probably be formatted with the {{cite interview}} template.

I hope this will be a workable compromise. NewYorkActuary (talk) 18:18, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@NewYorkActuary:. I like it. And thanks for your positive response. I am hoping to improve the page as citable material becomes available and I'm looking forward to your input. 8==8 Boneso (talk) 09:30, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I've added that. Proper Stranger (talk) 14:23, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
