History
In 1992, Heritage Technology Exhibition, a member of the Singapore Technologies Group, announced to build a centre to show Singapore's success. The centre was projected to cost SGD30 million and to be built within SAFTI Military Institute in Jurong. The ce1nter will have 10,000 square meters of exhibition space.
SDC was opened on 24 October 1996. The centre was built beside SAFTI Military Institute at a cost of SGD70 million. It was officially opened on 23 November 1996.
Exhibits
The Chief Exhibit Designer for the centre's creation is UK based Neal Potter. The centre was planned by Canadian company Lord Cultural Resources and the building was designed by mgt Architects from Australia.
Outdoor exhibits
The centre also has an outdoor exhibition of military hardware used by the Singapore Armed Forces. Permanent exhibits include an AMX-13 tank, UH-1H helicopter and a Skyhawk fighter jet.[5]
Awards and recognition
In 2012, SDC was awarded the Work-Life Achiever Award 2012 by Tripartite Committee on Work-Life Strategy.[6]
In 2013, SDC was awarded the Minister for Defence Award (MiDAs) and one of the ten corporate recipients to be inducted into the MiDAs League for a five-year tenure as advocates of national defence.[6]

The initial idea of constructing a museum to document the history of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) was raised in 1988. The architectural design for SDC was created by Mitchell Giurgola & Thorp Architects, and it is situated on the premises of the SAFTI Military Institute.[1]
On November 23, 1996, then-President Ong Teng Cheong formally inaugurated SDC as an edutainment center to instill hope for Singapore's future.[2] Neal Potter (based in the United Kingdom) is the center's Chief Exhibit Designer.[3] Lord Cultural Resources in Canada planned the center [4], and MGT Architects in Australia designed the structure.
After undergoing a review of the centre in 1999, Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) was chosen as the design consultants in 2001. Redevelopment work started in December 2002. [5] NEWater Visitor Centre was managed by SDC in 2002 and won awards from the Singapore Tourism Board. [6] SDC closed for redevelopment from November 2004 to June 2006.
The centre reopened on 18 July 2006 by then Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean.[7] The centre managed the Army Museum of Singapore in 2008.
Along with several MINDEF-related organisations, SDC also set up the Community Care and Recovery facility at Changi Exhibition Centre, which housed migrant workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.[8]
Exhibits[edit]
In 1997, SDC introduced an interactive 1.8m robot known as "Little George".[9]
With the start of rejuvenation plans in 2019, SDC has progressed to adopt a story-telling approach to become a lifestyle attraction to engage youths and families. After a 6-month renovation of its two-storey Permanent Exhibits Gallery, the centre reopened on 31 October 2020. The centre also features attractions like escape room and laser tag, while focusing on efforts related to digital transformation, innovation and sustainability.[10]
In November 2020, SDC launched a new exhibition, Through the Lens of Time, at the Upper Gallery of the Permanent Exhibits Gallery. The exhibition used augmented reality technology to allow visitors travel though Singapore's 700 years of history. On 20 November 2021, an exhibition, Sandbox, was launched at the Lower Gallery where visitors can explore the contemporary aspects of present-day Singapore and imagine the future for Singapore.[11]
Currently, the Singapore Discovery Centre includes multiple attractions including the Permanent Exhibits Gallery: Through the Lens of Time and Sandbox, Black Lake Facility (Escape Room) - Singapore's largest multi-storey escape room experience, Black Lake Laser Battlefield (Laser Tag), XD Theatre and the 5-storey high iWERKS Theatre. The centre also runs seasonal programmes for the members of public to discover more about the Singapore Story, as well as to engage young families and youths.[12]
Eco-Sustainability[edit]
Singapore Discovery Centre has solar panel installations on its lake, rooftops, and covered walkway in an effort to assist the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and move closer to becoming a net-zero energy attraction. In collaboration with partners, SDC has also created its very own Urban Garden as an initiative to inspire one to contribute towards eco-sustainability.[13]

- @Singapaw123! Thanks for the update. I will check on the details later tonight before deciding how much more to include into the article. However, a quick look at the list of updated references, some pointers:
- 1. avoid using press releases in general. they are considered as primary source. particularly mindef's as they are the parent organisation of SDC.
- 2. avoid using bachelor's thesis as an academic source, it is usually not peer reviewed. It however may be considered if it is demonstratably being widely cited in other published papers.
- 3. I see that NewspaperSG is being used. If you need further references from the local papers, but cannot view those articles through NewspaperSG because it is available only through the Library computers, try accessing Newslink after you have logged in through your Library account. – robertsky (talk) 02:52, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
