The real inventor

The real inventor of Sildenafil was Salvador Moncada, a medic born in Honduras who studied in El Salvador, i cannot get any reference to it yet, but if someone does, please edit it, he must recieve some credit, he was the one who discovered it and those british just copied his work. --190.86.16.99 (talk) 23:23, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Grapefruit?

Sildenafil (Viagra) appears on the List of drugs affected by grapefruit page, but grapefruit does not appear on the Sildenafil page.

So, just what is the effect of grapefruit when used with Viagra? Does it make the experience more interesting? Does it depend on timing, or mood? Is the combination hazardous? Gil (talk) 11:42, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Grapefruit can decrease the rate at which some drugs are metabolized. This means that the concentration of drug in the bloodstream will end up higher than expected. Since most drug doses are designed to produce a maximum effect at the recommended dose, both higher and lower doses can diminish the intended effect. Side effects, however, can be be worsened by higher doses. excreted by liver?

i believe it's incorrect to say the liver excretes anything (except bile).

perhaps it should say: "Sildenafil is metabolised by liver enzymes and excreted in the urine and feces."

Side Effects

It would be beneficial for readers to know whether the visual and hearing side effects are temporary or permanent. One's decision to use might hinge on whether he's risking permanent hearing loss or loss of hearing for ten minutes. Or a day or a week.

Therefore what we really need is a citation to a ref explaining these details. Something in PubMed Health might be a good source that is both reliable and also understandable by lay-readers. For example, in India the various sildenafil citrate brands all cost much less than 90 US-cents for a 100 mg pill. That is because India still allows only process patents, no product patents. (A product-patent ordinance was issued on 30 Dec 2004, but when the parliment will be in session in a month or so; it will have to be replaced by a bill - and the bill will have to be passed by majority vote in both houses of parliament - just like in the UK. We shall see.)

I believe there is a contextual error under the "dosage" heading. The way it currently reads, it is stating that one should not use the product more than once per day. Which is correct to the instructions. However the current statement also suggests that it should NOT be taken between 30 minutes and 4 hours prior to sexual intercourse.

The sentence which currently states: " It is not taken more than once per day between 30 minutes and 4 hours prior to sexual intercourse. "; should perhaps be written: "It is taken between 30 minutes and 4 hours prior to sexual intercourse, but not more than once per day."

This article neglects to give any information on arguably the most important topic:

What is the effect of the drug on someone who takes it?

Does a dose produce/induce an erection? If so, how long does it last? Can it be controlled?

On the other hand, does prescribed use restore the ability to get an erection in response to sexual arousal, as in a normal younger man?

Patent Expiration

The article states that Viagra was patented in 1996. The Term of patent in the United States is either 17 or 20 years. Therefore the Viagra patent should have expired in the United States by now making a generic form of the drug available. Is this happening? What can be said about this in the article. Correction to Sildenafil Introductory paragraph

The information presented here is slightly different than the source material in the citation and the wording is a bit confusing. The page currently states: "Onset is typically within 20 minutes and lasts for about 2 hours.[8] A dose of 25-100 mg should be taken four hours prior to activity."

It can be corrected as follows:

"Onset of action is typically within 20 minutes. The effects last for an average of 2 hours. A single dose should be taken about one hour prior to sexual activity". This is actually mentioned in the material cited there (https://www.drugs.com/monograph/sildenafil.html). The word activity should also correctly say sexual activity for clarity.

Would like to add research into trans-vaginal use to relieve period pain in women into the "medical uses" section

There was an important bit of research done in 2013 about the trans-vaginal use of Viagra in women to relieve moderate to severe period pain. It still requires further research with a largwer sample size to replicate the results, but the initial study showed very positive results.
