Chapter list[edit]

The chapter list appears strangely truncated. The earlier units came from an early version of Baird's, while those dated to 1975 and later came from the 20th edition of Baird's Manual. In a Google search I couldn't find that any of these remain active. What happened to the mid-century founded chapters, those installed between 1938 and 1975? Were there any? Note too, this Baird's article wasn't a re-print from the 19th edition, but was new for the 20th. In fact, this fraternity isn't listed in the 19th edition. Errors may have crept into this Baird's listing. Note this 1912 issue of Georgetown's yearbook, accessed 27 Oct 2021. It lists five chapters total for Sigma Nu Phi, with the correct name and pin for confirmation. The chapters include Texas, Nashville, Wisconsin, National University and Georgetown. Only National University and Georgetown are clean matches. Texas supposedly was installed in 1938, 26 years after publication of this yearbook, Vanderbilt is in Nashville, but was created in 1961, and there is no Wisconsin chapter in the list. I cannot otherwise explain it, than an uncommon Baird's error. Jax MN (talk) 22:11, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Working from their national magazine, although it is only giving me small previews, looking for things like https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Owl_of_Sigma_Nu_Phi/gRcOAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=%22choate%20Alpha%22 to verify each of the names, at least up through the 1950s. Note this appears to only link the name with the greek, but should be a good start in verification.Naraht (talk) 22:23, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I found a chapter count of 24 in the NYT at the time of its 50th anniversary conference in 1953. That matches what is in Baird's 17th, etc. So I am pretty sure that there were not new chapters in the 1950s that were missed. However, I did find two earlier chapters, from before the era of Greek letter names. I would know more if vol. 2 and 3 of The Owl were digitized... I am curious when the Greek letters were added to the chapter names. The Greek letter order doesn't match the charter order of the earliest chapters and is not mentioned in vol. 1, 4, and 5 of The Owl. Rublamb (talk) 04:32, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Charter dates.[edit]

I think a good number of the charter dates of the 1921 -1922 charters can be pulled from editions of the Owls. While I don't see vol 2 or vol 3, volumes 4 & 5 are available. The later ones from the 1930s and 1940s are snippets so time to play "games with snippets". Need to work on some things for the house so I may be a few days before I can get to this. Would not object if someone got to it first. :)Naraht (talk) 14:47, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have already looked at 4 and 5. Added what I found, but it was not much--you might find something I missed. I just found a newspaper article that said there were 6 chapters by January 31, 1904. We had 1 listed--I have found 4 more in vol. 1 of the Owl and in newspapers. Possibly Beta is the sixth if the last edition of Baird's is right about the 1903 founding date. I am still missing names for most. Also, it is possible that Beta started in 1903, went dormant, and was rechartered in 1910. Rublamb (talk) 18:21, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Next three[edit]

Pearson, Conwell and Mitchell do have dates in the Owl volume 5. I'll need to go back and figure out which edition for each volume.Naraht (talk) 11:29, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
