Merge Sideman with Session musician?[edit]

Not sure why - they are not exactly the same. My understanding is sidemen perform in concert and session musicians generally do not leave the studio. What would you call the combined article? Cricket02 04:01, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the two should remain separate articles. It would be useful if someone could write a short, concise description of the difference between the two terms that could be used at the beginning of each article. Engineer Bob 01:05, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Butch Taylor, of the Dave Matthews Band[edit]

What is the status of Butch Taylor, the keyboardist who has played and recorded with the Dave Matthews Band for many years, but is not considered an "official" member of the band? Is he a sideman? A guest musician? A band member? Something else?

I found this today[edit]

Goffin has played with other known musicians as a side-woman. I linked it (side-woman) to here but am wondering if "side-woman" is a real word or if "sideman" is actually one of those unfortunate gender neutral words that we learn to live with. I am not happy about some of this stuff[edit]

"Some examples of this are:

James Burton and Glen D. Hardin, playing guitar and keyboards respectively, who initially performed in the backing band for Elvis Presley, also backed Gram Parsons before joining newcomer Rodney Crowell and veteran Albert Lee in Emmylou Harris' "Hot Band". Don Henley and Glenn Frey were in the initial backup band for Linda Ronstadt, which toured in support of her eponymous debut album.

This makes it sound as if James Burton started as playing in Elvis' back-up band, not right. Also Linda Ronstadt's "eponymous" album was not her debut album. Also also was he not just a sideman with Emmylou Harris too? I'm about ready to remove this whole section unless I hear from someone who cares. Wrong link to John Paul Jones[edit]
