DYK[edit]

Since there enough, and the article was just created I copied the first sentence to WP:DYK Gnangarra 13:25, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Without a town"?[edit]

While the shire is famous for this, it also seems artificial as it depends on how you define town and a case of "what's in a name?" While the postal address for the shire office is in Mullewa, the site of the shire was gazetted in 1988. It also features a sports club, museum, roadhouse and caravan park, any of which would make the settlement more substantial than some recognised "towns" in WA. So I tend to think of this as a claim to fame/promotional exercise.

I think the present wording needs a bit of qualification. Comments?

My understanding was that, other than "Town of" municipalities (and obviously no shire can contain a town in that sense (cough cough; Northam merger)), the other useful administrative definition was that of a place with a post office. Mullewa has one. Hesperian 05:57, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find any 1988 gazettal - I have the index for that year sitting right here and the only one related to Murchison appears to be a reserve for conservation of flora and fauna. Orderinchaos 08:35, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hesp: quite a few towns have never had dedicated post offices. I would also tend to see capital-t "Town" as a different meaning/word (like e.g. city of Perth = metro area, while City of Perth is an LGA).

Order: even if there was no formal gazettal in 1988, it still gets back to "what's in a name" and I have to wonder at what point the shire considers that it has a town! E.g. see this govt press release from February last year:

Another important project that received RGS funding in round one is the redevelopment of Murchison settlement to provide a legitimate town centre for its community and visitors.
According to Commission CEO Steve Douglas “Murchison is the only Shire in Australia without a town centre and the RGS funding is being used to build a much needed tourist transaction centre and motel style accommodation.”
“These facilities will provide essential services for community members and cater for anticipated visitor and tourism growth generated by the Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways as well as providing valuable local employment opportunities during the construction phase.
“Contractors and local workers have been onsite for a while now and have already laid the foundations for the buildings with most of the walls, roofing and utilities nearing completion.”
According to Shire of Murchison CEO Ron Adams works should be complete and operational by May and the facilities should be officially launched in June this year.
