Split proposal[edit]

Following the RM at Talk:2018 WTA Shenzhen Open, I propose that this article is split in to 2 articles (ATP Shenzhen Open and WTA Shenzhen Open), and this page turned in to a dab page, as the ATP and WTA tournaments are 2 separate tournaments with the same name. Keeping them in one page implies that they're related in some way, when the only thing they have in common is that they're high level tennis tournaments in Shenzhen and have the same name (Shenzhen Open). They're held at different times, have different branding, different websites, etc. Draft versions are available at User:Iffy/ATP Shenzhen Open and User:Iffy/WTA Shenzhen Open.

Pinging those involved in the RM in some way @Gonnym:, @Flooded with them hundreds:, @Dreamy Jazz: and also @Fyunck(click):. IffyChat -- 10:10, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • The article is small as it is so I'm not so sure it's in our readers best interests to split it in two. I'm not saying it can't be done. We do have WTA Swiss Open and the Swiss Open to differentiate the mens and womens events, but part of that is because the womens event was held in so many different places, where the men's was always in Gstaad, Switzerland. The Canadian Open was held at different times for the men and women until recently, and they are both still held in different locations.... but it is one article. I'm not sure we want to split things just because we can. Fyunck(click) (talk) 10:25, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
From what I can tell, the Swiss tournaments are 2 different tournaments like the ones in Shenzhen that I'm proposing to split here, and the Canadian Open is currently one tournament with 2 different locations (but this may not have been the case in the past, I haven't checked). The way the Swiss tournaments are currently disambiguated is unacceptable but I'm not sure what the solution to that one is yet. I think each tournament should have 1 main article to avoid confusing readers about the relationship between similar tournaments. IffyChat -- 15:57, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's a minor issue, but you are incorrect in thinking that they are always split by putting an ATP or WTA in front of the name and then disambiguating the common name. The men's is the Stuttgart Open and the women have the Women's Stuttgart Open. The Qatar Open is under Qatar Open (tennis) for the men and Qatar Ladies Open for the women. The Auckland Open is done with ATP and WTA in front. Sometimes it has to do with which event was created first or the common name is different. As I said it's minor but I see you put a notice at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tennis to get some tennis input on how best to handle this. That was a good idea. I'm not proposing any other splits, mergers or moves right now (one at a time is enough work), but when I get a chance to look at other tournaments, I'll look at how the tournaments are different, and how reliable sources differentiate between similar tournaments. Each case is different as the examples you point out clearly show, there's no simple solution that will work every time. IffyChat -- 19:59, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree that it would be a stub, since current one is also a stub. Having said that, it doesn't really matter. These are two different tournaments held by two different orginizations at two different times. --Gonnym (talk) 10:55, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • As discussion has died down, I'm going to go ahead with the split now. IffyChat -- 12:06, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
