  •  Not done The Maine Secretary of State is elected by the Maine Legislature, not appointed. Candidates are put forth for a vote, not an appointment by a single person. 331dot (talk) 01:20, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect info with this article about Bellows[edit]

Incorrect entry in this article. Bellows was NEVER elected to her position as Secretary of State, she was actually APPOINTED. Maine voters did not vote her into her current position. Please correct. 47.39.229.21 (talk) 02:43, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See the above. Elections are held by any group, not just the population of a jurisdiction. Company board members elect the chairman of the board. The Maine Legislature elects the Secretary of State. It is not an appointment where a single person selects the holder of the position, candidates are put forth and a roll call vote is held. 331dot (talk) 08:57, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly true that the party that holds the most total seats in the Legislature usually gets its way, but not always, see Terry Hayes (politician) who was elected Treasurer with the support of minority Republicans and a small number of Democrats. Regardless, this is still not an appointment. An appointment is when a single person selects the holder of the position(with or without confirmation by a legislative body). 331dot (talk) 09:01, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
