Oral history vs writen[edit]

I grew up in Big Creek and the oral history passed down by the old timers there was that the cavalry didn't just accept the Sheepeater's surrender, but completely slaughtered the entire tribe without thought. The story was that they were just tired of dealing with them so they killed them all. These were older white people who told the story with much reverence and sadness. I wonder how much truth there is in the tale they told me as a child. I have no proof except for the fact that the Big Creek valley has a sadness that hangs over it. Despite it's beauty, it never struck me as a peaceful place. If you believe in ghosts, it's most definitely haunted by unhappy spirits. I never, ever, ever left my tent or cabin once dark fell while I lived there.
