Material[edit]

What type of material is the net made of?

Why do shark nets deter sharks from establishing a territory?

Who invented it?[edit]

I'm just guessing, wasn't it Norman Wallace Caldwell.--Mogoyogo (talk) 09:53, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What are the reasons for the mesh being large instead of very small?[edit]

Could electricity or ultrasound or something at the boat entrances piss off the sharks enough that they don't pass? Sagittarian Milky Way (talk) 20:06, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Although I will not site a source, I believe the mesh is large in order prevent the more threatening sharks from reaching the beach. These sharks are generally larger (bull, tiger, white) whereas sharks that pose a minimal threat to humans are smaller. Essentially, smaller net mesh means more unnecessary bycatch (more dying wildlife) so beaches intend to catch the big sharks, do not harm the other stuff. This is obviously still a problem for dolphins, whales, etc., which are also quite large. Wisdomthatiswoe (talk) 15:15, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, a viable solution, see Ocean Guardian LR1000 barrier. Andreborell (talk) 03:29, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
