The second sentence "The 1980 election was triggered by James Callaghan's loss at the 1979 general election, and Foot's own disastrous defeat in the 1983 general election." makes no sense. What follows the comma, an event in 1983, is made to appear to be another trigger to that in 1980.

Presumably the author intended to continue by adding a predicate to what is currently a noun phrase; " triggered his own resignation" perhaps?

This has been so with no significant change since its first addition in the revision as of 00:34, 2 October 2011
