A type, not just an example[edit]

The title Seated Buddha from Gandhara describes an iconographic type, of which there are many many examples, including further examples in the British Museum itself, I'm sure. A parallel would be Madonna and Child from Italy.--Wetman (talk) 16:17, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Johnbod, how would you fix this one? Seated Buddha from Gandhara (British Museum 1895,1026.1)? —Srnec (talk) 16:07, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This from 2010. According to strict WP disam rules, if we only had one article on a Madonna and Child from Italy, that title would be ok; as it is we have approaching 400. Sitting (as opposed to standing) Buddhas are in fact not all that common from Gandhara & we don't I think have any article that is ambiguous with the current title. I rather doubt the BM actually has other "Seated Buddha from Gandhara" figures, but unless they have articles, it doesn't matter anyway. Plus of course, insofar as it is a type, the title works for readers. If we do anything we should follow Standing Buddha from Gandhara (Tokyo), with Seated Buddha from Gandhara (British Museum) - too many museums in "London" I think, though that could work. Catalogue numbers should usually be a last desperate resort for large objects. Now Buddha in Nirvana is one that really need sorting. Johnbod (talk) 17:00, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There is also the Kimbell seated Bodhisattva, whose identity is not entirely certain, but is not from Gandhara. Johnbod (talk) 17:16, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I found this, which if its description is correct is another Gandharan seated Buddha from the British Museum, although we have no article on it. The museum's page on our "Seated Buddha from Gandhara" has no title. Srnec (talk) 03:15, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it does: The Buddha, which doesn't get us very far. The other is a BM one (1880.217, not on display, but sent to Madrid etc this year), and there are in fact a number of others, but most small. What [https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/term/x23061?id=x23061&page=1#page-top a huge quantity they have, with only a handful on display! I must say I'd be inclined to swop these two round in terms of display. Johnbod (talk) 03:52, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
