Becher vs. Beecher[edit]

Proposed change to this page[edit]

As I write this, a google search for "beecher bay" scia'new [1] estimates "About 4,780 results", and a google search for "becher bay" scia'new [2] estimates "About 935 results".

I have not yet been involved in any debate about this nomenclature. I have no significant ties to BC nor to native issues. I came across a red link to Becher Bay on the Klallam page, which, as part of Did You Know, is linked to from the Main Page right now. (Here's the archived version, in case you're reading this in the future.)

I'm here because I think we can safely say

The Scia'new First Nation or Becher Bay Indian Band or Beecher Bay Indian Band

Although one of them may be more correct, it appears both are used. In particular,

the Te'mexw Treaty Association

and the provincial government

are seen here to use the spelling "Beecher". In fairness, the first link and the last link have the same verbatim text.

Proposed change to other pages[edit]

I suspect this debate belongs on the talk pages, rather than in the articles themselves, so until the naming debate (if there is one) can be resolved, it might be beneficial to replace the contested spellings, on other pages, with Scia'new First Nation, Scia'new Nation, or Scia'new, as the case may be.

I've gone ahead and made the change because of WP:BEBOLD, on this page (but not others). --Mathieu ottawa (talk) 23:05, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
