Copyright problem removed[edit]
This article was based on the corresponding section in Ayling's Collins Guide to the Sea Fishes of New Zealand, and/or corresponding articles at fishbase.org or niwascience.co.naz, none of which are compatibly licensed for Wikipedia. It has been revised on this date as part of a large-scale project to remove infringement from these sources. Earlier text must not be restored, unless it can be verified to be free of infringement. South American pilchard → Sardinops sagax – requesting move to the scientific name for this fish as there are multiple vernacular names depending upon where it occurs thus precluding one being chosen as COMMONNAME. - Comment. Per WP:MONOTYPICFAUNA, this should be located at the genus name, Sardinops. We also have a short article on a subspecies, Peruvian Pacific sardine, which could gracefully be merged here, I don't see a need for a split. Not being an expert on the subject, I won't !vote on the substance of the request. No such user (talk) 13:59, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
- Support move to Sardinops. There aren't any vernacular names that are commonly used to refer to this fish across the entirety of it's range. The vernacular names that are used refer to subspecies that are more geographically limited (e.g., South American pilchard refers to Sardinops sagax sagax), but are misleading when applied to the species as a whole.
