national church of Great Britain?[edit]

Could we have a source, please, for the statement that San Silvestro in the 'national church of Great Britain' in Rome? The official site of the church of San Silvestro states that 'Pope Leo XIII designated San Silvestro in Capite as church for the English-speaking peoples...' [1].

As regards the term 'national': for the Catholic church, Great Britain is, quite correctly, a geographical, not a 'national', area; nor is it a 'state', since it does not encompass the whole of the U.K. ( thus, the Nuncio to the U.K. government is termed the Nuncio to 'Great Britain' solely because his remit does not extend to Northern Ireland, and thus not to the whole of the U.K.). Most importantly, England/Wales and Scotland have separate national hierarchies, Scotland's created by the same Leo XIII quoted above. [2] Ceartas (talk) 21:50, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

temple of Apollo[edit]

National church status -not minor basilica[edit]

This church is not listed as a minor basilica by the Diocese. The Diocese is responsible for describing it as the "National Church of Great Britain". As the comment above notes, there are problems with this and the clergy in charge prefer to describe it as the "Church for the English-Speaking Peoples in Rome". This, however, is unofficial. The "British" description was substituted for "English" after the Scots deconsecrated their own national church of Sant'Andrea degli Scozzesi. However, I can vouch that many Scots and Welsh seriously object to the term "British" as a nationality. There have also been issues among the English expatriates in Rome about the church being "taken over" by Filippinos, and many of them now worship at the English College chapel as a result. I'm going to summarise all this in the church's page on the "Churches of Rome Wiki", since it is difficult or unsuitable to do so on a Wikipedia page. Not "National Church of Great Britain"[edit]

I've just checked the Diocesan description of this church. It is Chiesa Nazionale Gran Bretagna, not Chiesa Nazionale di Gran Bretagna. This is a subtle but important distinction.
