Broad gauge[edit]

I've removed the claims about the Broad gauge ending at Saltney. Under the Gauge Act 1846, lines could be built or converted to the Broad Gauge, provided that they were extensions to an existing B.G. railway. MacDermot (1927, p. 383) states that the GWR "applied for powers ... to run over and use the Shrewsbury & Birmingham, Shrewsbury & Chester, Shrewsbury & Hereford, and Birkenhead, Lancashire & Cheshire Junction Railways, as well as the intervening piece of the Chester & Holyhead and the Birkenhead Docks, and for that purpose at their own expense to lay additional broad-gauge rails on those lines from Wolverhampton to Birkenhead".
