Bioluminescence[edit]

Osamu Shimomura's 2012 revised book on Bioluminescence claims sakura shrimp has never been observed emitting light, based on Yata Haneda 1985.

Confusing however, since Shimomura in a 2009 speech stated "sakura shrimp caught in Suruga Bay are bioluminescent organisms"[1]

Of course, Shimomura's speech might be referring very loosely to some shrimp[s] of the same genus or same family (Sergestidae is "Sakura ebi ka" in Japanese).

Or if there fresher research proving bioluminescence? I caught sight of a claim that when UV light is directed, this was seen to cause phosphorescence, but any truth to this? --Kiyoweap (talk) 07:03, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Biolumenescence has been confirmed as per Omori et al. (1997)[2]

The paper explains previous attempts (Omori 1969 and Haneda 1985) at observation were unsuccessful.--Kiyoweap (talk) 17:52, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
