The True Secret of Roasman NC[edit]

Forget the family the town was named after, that isn't any news. The real news is the government's 85 foot satelite dish on top of mountain for 30 years. The government denies it is even there, yet can be seen from air without any problems. NASA or NSC has operated this listening device for over 30 years without most residents in the area even knowing it is there. The satellite referred to above in Balsam Grove is not a secret (and never has been since anyone can drive by & view it). The facility that houses this satellite and others is now known as PARI (Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute). You can read more about it online at their website: www.pari.edu. It is an awesome place to tour. They offer many tours/events that are open to the public. Before PARI, the site began as a satellite tracking station for NASA. It then became a research station for the Dept of Defense before being closed. Gratefully, the US Forest Service purchased the facility and it is now used as an educational facility. Please help dispel the rumors that the government is denying the existence of the satellite(s). One of the satellites has a huge smiley face painted on it. Rosman Research Station was the name prior to PARI acquiring the site - there are plenty of articles in the press about it, although the fact that the NSA was the DOD agency isn't quite so well documented. I'm told that decomissioning the required 300 truck trips to remove the materials DOD didn't want to leave there, but the 26m antenna and electrical plant was left in place. There was also (in 2003) a helipad. The research and STEM education missions that the site is doing now is a good use of the facility. The old "government facility / national security act of 1950" signs were there when I last visited in 2003, as reminders of the past, but http://www.pari.edu/about_pari/history/ is a good place to go for current information. 174.101.136.61 (talk) 17:53, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
