Why do people have to announce to the world that they are gay, openly or otherwise?

Additionally, what is meant by "openly gay"? You look at his Facebook page, you look at his official site, all the article that come up on a Google search... none of these says anything about his sexual orientation. You might assume he is gay... maybe he even confirmed it during some interview at one point.
