Merger Proposal[edit]

To not merge, given the difference in scope; there was disagreement over the extent of overlap. Klbrain (talk) 12:11, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I propose merging Roman Catholic Diocese of Sant' Angelo de' Lombardi-Bisaccia into Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi–Conza–Nusco–Bisaccia. The former is one of several historical designations of the area, and only has its own page because it happened to be current in 1913, when the Catholic Encyclopedia was published. Why not just delete the "Diocese" article? The "Archdiocese" article has everything the "Diocese" article has, but updated and filled out, amplified and annotated. The "Diocese" article is just a cut-and-paste job. Vicedomino (talk) 18:39, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seems reasonable to me. Moriwen (talk) 17:22, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For purposes of preserving the article history of the Diocese article and preserving link integrity, I think it is much better to merge that article in. Manually add anything from that article that is not already in this article, and then make that a redirect to this page. Ergo Sum 18:56, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your suggestion (thanks!) has technical points in its favor. But if you had read the two articles in question, you would see that the "Diocese" article has nothing to contribute; it is nothing but cut-and-paste, and the good is already incorporated and improved in the "Archdiocese" article. Merging would only reintroduce material that has been supersceded or corrected. The Catholic Encyclopedia material is over a century old, and does not include major changes in the structure and operation of the Catholic Church in Italy carried out in the 20th century. Agree with Ergo Sum. Merging would only reintroduce material that has been supersceded or corrected if the person doing the merge choose to include it. And why would they? Manannan67 (talk)
Oppose. I've looked at the content on Roman Catholic Diocese of Sant' Angelo de' Lombardi-Bisaccia and certainly don't agree that the article duplicates contents already at Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi–Conza–Nusco–Bisaccia. For examples, the lists of bishops are almost entirely unique. Regarding being out of date, the article is for a former diocese, and hence it is not expected to change over time, and should not take account of changes in structure in the 20th century. The sourcing from the 1912 article is entirely appropriate for a diocese that ceased to exist more than a century ago. The current structure of a separate daughter article for the former diocese works well for readers and a merge would only disrupt the linear flow of the main article.
