Earthbound Originals?[edit]

The article has the passage "Keeping the Earthbound original in a state of sensory deprivation allows him ..." in it. I don't think this is accurate. I just finished the novel and I am pretty sure that the original person is destroyed to power the machine and then two copies are simultaneously created and they share a connection due to this shared creation. This lasts for a while and is extended by the use of the deprivation chamber. But the original is most certainly destroyed. I will try to find a valid passage in the novel.

Also, the note "remember me to her" doesn't make as much sense unless the original is destroyed.

From my copy of the novel (First Equinox Printing, December, 1974) on page 101 in the paragraph beginning with "Barker lay in his suit, his arms sprawled at his sides." it continues further down, "There are going to be two of you," Hawks said. "When you're scanned, the signal describing you will be sent not only to the receiver on the Moon but to the one in the laboratory here. The signal to the laboratory receiver will be held in a tape delay deck until the duplicate signal has reached the Moon. Then both receivers will simultaneously resolve a Barker."

Sorry for all the edits: One more passage, page 71: Hawks is explaining the function of the machine to Barker and he says, " 'But the original Barker is gone, forever, and his atoms have been converted into the energy that drove the transmitter.' Without Their Knowledge?[edit]

most having been copied without their knowledge and shanghaied.

I just finished this novel, and I don't believe this is true. I think the observors were aware of the situation. Can anyone provide a quote to support "without their knowledge"? 207.31.229.4 16:28, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct. Here's the relevant quote, courtesy of Steve Greenland at rec.arts.sf.written:

Without attribution, the points raised here seem to be OR, that dreaded thing ;). The reason that I bring this up is that, as was pointed out, Budrys was one of the authours of the entering wedge for the New Wave.
