defensive lapse in 9th inning of game 7 of the 1960 World Series[edit]
With Mickey Mantle on first and Gil McDougald on third, one out, Pirates winning 9-8 in the top of the ninth of game 7, Yogi Berra hit a hot smash to Nelson. All Nelson had to do for the Pirates to win the World Series was throw to second and take the return throw to get the slow-running Berra. Instead, he stepped on first to get Berra (taking the force off Mantle), but for some bizarre reason I'd like to see explained in this article, Mantle never broke for second and instead dived immediately back into first base. The Yankees soon tied it 9-9, but of course Mazeroski led off the bottom of the ninth. If Nelson ever explained why he didn't make the easy double-play and why Mantle never broke for second, it would add a lot of interest to this article.RustyGriswold (talk) 16:39, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
