Notability[edit]

I have serious concerns about this article. Less than half of it is about the subject. Most of the remainder is devoted to his daughter and her husband, William Mahone, both of whom have their own articles already. There is also a paragraph about his grandson, who has his own article, and the presence of this paragraph led another editor to misclassify this article under "History of Laredo, Texas".

There is also the matter of Butler's notability. The only cited reference is a 19th century genealogy, which has a grand total of two sentences about Butler (and says his daughter was his cousin). He was purportedly Virginia State Treasurer, but that post does not provide affirmative notability under WP:POLITICIAN. More and better sources, and a major rewrite, are called for here. I have assessed this article as Start-class and identified the following areas for improvement:
  • The article needs cleaning up
  • Also needs portions put on a disambiguation page
