Route of the Fleet Line[edit]

The article currently states: "In the 1970s, the river gave its name to a planned London Underground tube line which was to run alongside the route of the former river." This implies that the Fleet Line was supposed to run parallel to the river, doesn't it? As I understand it, that's incorrect -- the Fleet Line was to run under Fleet Street and Ludgate Hill, exactly perpendicular to the river. Can anyone confirm this? You are correct, the Line was to run under Fleet Street. When Horace Cutler became Leader of the GLC in 1977 he cut back the route to terminate at Charing Cross and renamed it 'Jubilee' line to commemorate the anniversay. Geology[edit]

Has a map on its last page which shows a geological cross-section through much of London. Of particular interest is the bit just to the west of Farringdon station, which is labelled "zone of faulting folding", which has some major upheavals in the various layers, and a notable dip in surface level. Is this the valley of the Fleet? Does that mean the valley is here following an ancient fault line?

Links to digital map showing route of the river Fleet[edit]

Readers wanting to know more of the course of the river and explore the route would want to know about PocketEarthwww.pocketearth.com and OpenStreetMap. This is a free map/navigation app available for the iphone which clearly marks the course of the Fleet river from Water Lane to the Thames. Would this be appropriate to add to the page? Course and Tributaries[edit]

In the head of this section the third paragraph says, " …two viaduct bridges (on Rosebery Avenue where it crosses Warner Street; and at Holborn Viaduct across Farringdon Street), which carry roads…" According to Google Maps there is no viaduct in Rosebery Avenue. Living in New Zealand prevents me from checking but I don't remember seeing a viaduct there when I lived in London. OrewaTel (talk) 05:46, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but there is a very definite viaduct and bridge: see detailed description and images here]. It's perhaps not very obvious from Rosebery Avenue, but is from Warner Street. GrindtXX (talk) 12:32, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fair point, and I've now added the Shoe Lane bridge. It's arguably part of Holborn Viaduct, which I think is probably why it wasn't there already; but it is quite distinct from the main viaduct, and probably does deserve a mention. GrindtXX (talk) 20:58, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

London Underground tube line[edit]

GrindtXX, as you seem to be invested in this citation, as is Ok with me. But let's explore the "not remotely off topic" claim. We're talking about a rail line - not a water course - that was planned to be named something and then was not, and then did not get built. That's pretty vaporous. The Fleet Line is not important to the article of River Fleet but it is nevertheless relevant. I lived in London at that time and once the Victoria Line was being built, the plan was for the 'Fleet Line' next. Of course the new line was renamed Jubilee Line for various reasons but the proposed name indicates the perceived importance of the river at that time.
