The Chesham article states ' Prior to the 19th century the Chess was known as the Isene relating to the iron-charged spring waters feeding it. ' See Chesham#Topography_and_geology. Can anyone add clarification in this article? Lumos3 (talk) 09:04, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have revised the text and added so citations for the name 'Isen' (Isene). Please feel free to redit if this wording is not tight enough.
You may also be aware or interested to know that the the Chess was also known downstream near the eponymous village as the 'Loudwater' for at least a period prior to the mid-19th century. I have been unable to find the name 'Chess' for the river's name recorded before circa 1850 in the local newspaper or any of the books on the town and local area. Instead it is variously known as 'the Chesham River', 'the Chesham Stream' or the 'Chesham Brook'. We know that the name Chess is a back-formation of Chesham and it is perhaps understandable given the usage of Chesham River that this became shortened over a relatively short period to 'Chess'.Tmol42 (talk) 23:22, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
