SHIELD[edit]

Despite the cover of the Untold Tales of Spider-Man on the main page, Richard and Mary Parker were not SHIELD agents. SHIELD was established as not being formed until around the start of the "modern" Marvel era, when Peter was already a teenager. This was established in numerous other comics, and confirmed as still being the case (e.g. not retconned by the Untold Tales story) in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Hardcover #8 entry on Richard and Mary, which notes that SHIELD was formed a "over a decade" after their deaths. 86.158.46.54 (talk) 13:03, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, explain how I am misinformed about Richard and Mary Parker supposedly being SHIELD agents. The comics have repeatedly shown that SHIELD was only founded relatively recently, after the start of the "modern" era, by which time Peter Parker was already Spider-Man, long after Richard and Mary died. The only time they are referred to as SHIELD agents is the cover of Untold Tales Minus One; they aren't referred to as SHIELD agents in the story within. And here http://marvel.com/blogs//entry/631 is Tom Brevoort noting that cover is in error "And yes, that cover copy proclaiming Richard and Mary parker Agents of SHIELD was a mistake, and it was entirely made by me. I remembered that they had been secret agents, and I somehow misrecalled Stan saying that they had been working for SHIELD, even though he didn't. I really should have checked that." This is reaffirmed by the Parker's recent Handbook entries, which note them to be CIA and that SHIELD was founded a decade after they died, and by the SHIELD entry which does not list them as agents of the agency.86.158.46.54 (talk) 23:03, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am not doubting what you said because I am not sure of this as you seem to be. But why does the article image have Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on it if they ever weren't agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I am thinking we need an reliable reference on this and I am not talking about issue, I am talking about an reliable link on an autobiography or something reliable. Thank you. The cover has "Agents of SHIELD" on it because, as Tom Brevoort explains in his blog (which I quoted to and linked to), he made a mistake when he put together the text to go on the cover. As simple as that - the cover is an admitted mistake. I've provided information about the Richard and Mary Parker biography in the Handbooks that confirms this, but naturally I can't provide an internet link to a paper and ink book. However the blog link takes you to Marvel's own site, so there's no question as to the identity of the blogger; given he's the editor who handled the comic in question, he ought to know what he is talking about when he says it was incorrect to describe the characters that way. 86.137.6.224 (talk) 13:30, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
