Not "lithographic"[edit]

Hoe's presses were not "lithographic". They used printing plates.[1] High speed lithography for newspaper printing came much later. --John Nagle (talk) 18:50, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Category:American people of English descent[edit]

@Johnpacklambert I'm curious about Special:Diff/1218577249. The category seems appropriate to me. RoySmith (talk) 15:29, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I really think this category is almost always excessive. In this case it might work. However is it really defining for this person? Were they ever in any ways different than people who did not have immigrant parents?John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:31, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The question with categories is not just does it apply, but also does it make them part of a distinctive group.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:31, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not an expert in categories, so I'm happy to go with your call. Thanks for the explanation. RoySmith (talk) 15:33, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I really do not think we should have the category at all. With English language and culture dominating in the US, I do not think that those of English descent are ever a distinctive group. I say this even though I know in some key ways my grandmother who both of her father's parents were immigrants from England, immigrating not too long before her father was born, was in a few noticeable ways distinctly English in culture. I still do not think it is enough for categorizing by and the category tends to have lots of people placed in it for whom it is clearly not a defining trait, and in some cases who we do not know it is a trait at all. These categories often are also sorted by last name, as opposed to actual known descent which is also problematic. I am thinking we should have the immigrant category and that is it. I really think that same also applies to Irish, German, French, Scottish and Welsh descent. In these other groups there are clearly people who it is defining for, but there are too many people placed in them who it is clearly not defining for to really use the category in a stable and meaningful way.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:36, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
