relevance?[edit]

What is the relevance of the fact that Hatch bought real estate in Nova Scotia in 2002? He's a real estate dealer; he undoubtedly has made many such purchases. MK2 02:48, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

that the money that he owes on his taxes were probably used to pay for it. The word Tax Shelter or something like that as something to do with it. Your right it is not relevent in so far as that it is a property that he by canadian standards bought legally. Whippletheduck (talk) 05:14, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hatch won the $1 million in 2000. He was indicted on charges of tax evasion in 2005, but he steadfastly maintained his innocence and refused a plea bargain. Prosecutors eventually dropped the tax evasion charges, and eight months later, indicted him on those charges again plus bank fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud and charity fraud (10 counts total). Hatch still refused to plea bargain and went to trial in Jan 2006 where he was aquitted of all charges except "attempting to evade taxes." Hatch contends he was only convicted of the tax charges because prosecutors' obfuscation and dissembling prevented anyone from following the facts. The IRS had never assessed him as having owed any taxes, and as of 2011, Hatch continued to fight to be exonerated with (despite all media claims to the contrary) never having been assessed to owe any taxes. Hatch continues to maintain his innocence. Bottom line, the properties Hatch bought in Nova Scotia and elsewhere in 2002 were bought at tax sales, and then, as a decade later, no money Hatch owed was ever used to pay for anything. Guilty[edit]

he's so guilty of the tax evasion thing it's absurd. this guy is a crook. he set up a fake charity and solicited donations, then spent the money on himself. i read the whole indictment on thesmokinggun.com--Alhutch 22:32, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Roffle @ being sentenced for tax evasion Cookn4evar 00:26, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

See answer above. Hatch was acquitted of any wrongdoing with respect to his charity, Horizon Bound. In fact, it was funded entirely of his own money. Three contributions/donations were at issue in trial, and all three were received by Hatch for Horizon Bound in lieu of payment for services (appearance on The Weakest Link, speaking engagement, and appearance on a pilot television program). While Hatch was sentenced for "attempting to evade taxes", those taxes had never been determined to be due and the details/facts have been so skewed by corrupt prosecutors and complicit media, there will likely be a book in which tax experts explain what really happened. Son?[edit]

Who has custody?

Officially, it's none of our business. I read somewhere though that his sister usually takes care of his son while he is doing reality TV shoots and stuff. Whippletheduck (talk) 06:15, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is it really none of our business? Don't all biographies have a section relating to the person's known family life? Hatch's son was shown on Episode 8, Season 1 of Survivor. Wouldn't that merit a sentence such as "Hatch has one known son" or something like this?--Petzl (talk) 15:47, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hatch's son, Christopher, is an adult in his last year at University. Hatch has also recently connected with biological children who were the result of his sperm donations. Triwhale (talk) 09:12, 21 August 2012 (UTC)R.Hatch[reply]

"...aligned with ex-Navy seal Rudy Boesch who was homophobic"[edit]

I just stumbled across this article, so this will be a casual viewer's perspective: The second paragraph mentions him forming an alliance with Rudy Boesch, who is noted as being homophobic. I wondered how that would be relevant to their alliance. I wondered a long time until in the end, I read he lost a position as a host on a gay dating game show. So I figure he is homosexual, right? If this is so, one should either mention it in the second paragraph so it makes sense - or remove the note completely. Tierlieb 23:29, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • User:SatyrTN fixed that. Seems like you worked hard to find a reference. Thank you, now it makes much more sense. Tierlieb (talk) 14:32, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rudy Boesch is openly anti-homosexual, and in the Survivor 1 DVD, there is a part where Rudy is being interviewed by Mark Burnett prior to the show. He is asked if he would vote for someone SOLEY because the person was gay. Rudy answered "Yes". He was asked if he would vote for someone whom was a lesbian. Rudy answered "Yes". When asked if he would vote for someone soley because they were black, Rudy answered "No". This is in both the Season 1 DVD as well as the SURVIVOR MOST OUTRAGEOUS MOMENTS dvd as well. Whippletheduck (talk) 05:16, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just watched this again, and this is my completely original interpretation. The way it is presented on the show, Rudy did not know Richard was gay until after he'd formed a favorable impression of Richard due to Richard's decisive personality, which Rudy admired (presumably due to his military background). Rudy did not like the tendency of some of the other survivors, especially the women, to make decisions by committee or via consensus building; he thought there should be a "big man in charge" who makes the decisions and everyone goes along with that, and he saw Richard as that person. So when he later found out that Richard was gay, he didn't like it, but he managed to accept Richard in a leadership position within the alliance. In a later episode Richard remarked that Rudy would simply ask him whom to vote for, and was very loyal and obedient. So it seemed that his comfort with chain-of-command power structures allowed him to overcome his homophobia (which also may have been a result of his military background). I don't think there's any way to get that into the article since it's my own purely original thought, but I hope it helps anyway. ausa کui × 22:06, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rudy is very open that he is anti-homosexual. However, I don't see how that is relevant to the article, and I see that it has been fixed, which is good. I have something that might help shed some light on the situation. Around Episode 2 or 3, I remember Rudy saying something along these lines, "The homosexual is one of the nicest people I have ever met. I don't appreciate his life style, but I guess I will try to until this game is over." He came to respect Richard, I believe. Whitestorm17 (talk) 00:42, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the line Rudy used about Hatch is, "He's fat, and he's queer, but he's smart." Triwhale (talk) 09:16, 21 August 2012 (UTC)R.Hatch[reply]

Smuggled matches[edit]

The following message was left on my talk page. Because it's about this specific article rather than about me personally, I'm moving the discussion here.

An edit you reverted on me. Lets discuss

On this page Richard_Hatch_(Survivor_contestant) You undid my edit about Richard Hatch smuggling in matches. I edited under my IP. But im using my account to contact you. I am in the process of watching all the seasons of survivor and it just so happens I am watching all-stars. In the second episode, all 3 tribes got fire when they opted to get flint instead of blankets when one tribe won. Prior to this there was no fire from any tribe, nor a mention of it. In fact, Richard helped make the fire with the flint and was annoyed he couldnt get it started right away. Yes, the information is 'souced' But the inquirer is not a valid source in my opinion. To the best of my knowledge, they make up news mixed in with truth. Second, no survivor contestent is strip searched. Ever.

So the debate begins. I believe that the source is false. I wanted to discuss this with you first before taking it to a public discussion.

THanks! Ivtv (talk) 23:15, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since this is an issue about a particular article, it's best to bring it up on the article's talk page. TJRC (talk) 23:37, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll go along with whatever the consensus is. My sense is that your own recollection and synthesis from what you saw on the TV show is more original research and less of a reliable source than the cited Philippine Daily Inquirer story ([1]). TJRC (talk) 23:48, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah but is the source itself reliable? Ivtv (talk) 23:54, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing in Philippine Daily Inquirer and the many references to it in the WP: space suggest it isn't. Is there any reason to disbelieve that they accurately reported what Jeff Probst said; or to disbelieve Probst himself? Mind you, this is a little point; reliability of sources aside, the consensus might be that it's just not worth including. TJRC (talk) 04:32, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd have to look but I do remember seeing an interview with Jeff Probst somewhere where he say's a former Survivor did indeed smuggle matches in his rectal area, don't remember what the exact quote was. He never actually said whom it was, but it did not take a lot of imagination picturing Richard Hatch doing the deed. Whippletheduck (talk) 18:04, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, this topic seems to have been forgotten, and yes, I agree that unless we have an actual confirmation, it shouldn't be added to the article. Whitestorm17 (talk) 00:46, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As described above, all three tribes got fire when they got flint. This "smuggled matches" discussion is wholly concocted speculation unrelated to actual events. Triwhale (talk) 09:15, 21 August 2012 (UTC)R.Hatch[reply]

in a prison gang?[edit]

is there any info on if he is in a prison gang or not. I know he is in a hardcore prison. and when you go to prison you have to join a gang. so if anyone can update that section thanks Galaxiehoon (talk) 07:49, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When you go to prison, you do not have to join a gang. Hatch has never been in any gang. Triwhale (talk) 09:17, 21 August 2012 (UTC)R.Hatch[reply]

I heard he was trading his a$$ for anything he wanted in prison. He was selling a$$ o'plenty. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.76.151.56 (talk) 21:51, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hatch being a villain in 20th season of survivor[edit]

In this interview Jeff Probst, survivor's host, talking about Hatch not making it to the Heroes Vs. Villains season. He claims that both in the game and in real life Richard Hatch was THE villain of the series, but since he only got out of prison and still in house arrest, he's not allowed to leave the US and couldn't join. http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/02/08/survivor-heroes-vs-villains-jeff-probst/ Alongo86 (talk) 09:50, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is a very intresting article, although I don't think there is any reason to add it to the article. Whitestorm17 (talk) 01:33, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hatch was prevented by hypocritical prosecutors who were demanding Hatch make payments toward some tax liability that may someday be determined to be due while simultaneously preventing him from participating in Survivor. After serving a sentence Hatch should never have served, Hatch was twice invited to return to Survivor after All-Stars, and both times, prosecutors objected to Hatch's request that he be allowed to participate. On March 11, 2011, Hatch was ordered back to prison, no later than Monday, March 14, 2011. Article has been updated. Famspear (talk) 21:00, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tax evasion conviction and imprisonment[edit]

The section "Tax evasion conviction and imprisonment" needs a lot of work. It is extremely POV and the prose is so bad that you can't really pull the important facts out of it, such as how long he was imprisoned. 66.74.161.163 (talk) 07:04, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hatch was sent back to prison for an alleged probation violation (not amending his 2000 tax return) despite respected experts' testimony at Hatch's hearing that it was not possible for Hatch to have been more compliant with the IRS process and, in fact, it is not possible to amend tax returns that are the subject of an ongoing audit. Just as Hatch had been brought to trial without an assessment ever having been completed, Hatch had been pursuing his day in tax court all along. Triwhale (talk) 09:26, 21 August 2012 (UTC)R.Hatch[reply]

The last comment above was meant for the previous section.

Hatch was sentenced to 51 months for "attempting to evade taxes", longer than anyone else in U.S. history for the amounts prosecutors wrongfully claimed Hatch owed. Hatch owed nothing at the time of trial, and resolution of his assessment continues to this day. Prosecutors have done a brilliant job of preventing the public from recognizing that no matter what taxes may eventually be determined to be due, it is not possible for Hatch to have evaded taxes in 2000 that have yet to be determined to be due. SAG issue with the other Richard Hatch[edit]

While the entry line references actor Richard Hatch, Richard Hatch (Survivor contestant)'s wikipedia page should have a section noting the problem that their identical names (without the use of middle initial or name) briefly created for the Screen Actors Guild. 143.232.210.38 (talk) 17:17, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
