Below is are references to primary material relating to Dean:

  • Dean's father worked as a clerk in the Foreign Office, and his mother was Catherine, née Ware. He was baptised on 27 January the following year. The name of his father is given in Arrowsmith (1974), p. 53 ; his corresponding record of birth has been indexed by the Family History Library (film no. 561143) and gives his mother as Catherine. The marriage of Charles Brietzcke and Catherine Ware in 1769 is recorded in the parish registers at Guildhall, St Bride Fleet Street, Register of marriages, 1736 - 1775, P69/BRI/A/01/Ms 6542/1. Charles was a clerk from 1756 to 1795, as is stated in D. Kynaston, The Secretary of State, 1978, p. 165, and died 1795; by his will (National Archives, PROB 11/1261/245) bequeathed everything to Catherine, his wife. He died aged 57 and his tombstone is transcribed in T. Smith, A Topographical and Historical Account of the Parish of St. Mary-le-Bone, 1833, p 69 ; Catherine received a pension from the Government (see The Extraordinary Red Book, containing a List of all Places, Pensions and Sinecures, 1819, p. 32).
