Corrections[edit]

This article confuses the identities of three Richard Carpenters. Neither of the two clergymen among them was the father of William1 Carpenter of Providence, Rhode Island (the latter had no middle name; Vincent is his sister Frideswide's married surname).

One of the clergymen named Richard Carpenter entered Exeter College, Oxford, in 1592; became rector of Shirwell (in rural Devon) in 1605 and of adjacent Loxhore in 1611; married Susan Trevelyan of Nettlecombe, Somerset, in 1606; received a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1616/7; and died at Loxhore in 1627, aged 52. His will names several children, but none is a son William or daughter Frideswide. The other Richard Carpenter, clergyman, entered Kings College, Cambridge, in 1622 (making him only a few years older than William1 of Providence); twice lived in Europe for a few years; spent most of his adult life oscillating between Protestantism and Catholicism; married in middle age; and finally settled at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, where he died about 1670. From the foregoing facts, it is certain that neither of these men was the father of William1 Carpenter of Providence.

Providence William's father was probably the Richard Carpenter of “Aymsbury” (Amesbury, Wiltshire) named in the 1598[/9] will of Robert Carpenter of the adjacent parish of Newton Toney (their relationship is not stated). This Richard Carpenter may be the man of that name who married Alice Knight at Newton Toney in 1603 (direct evidence of this has not been found) and is probably the one buried at Amesbury in 1625. His house on Frog Lane in Amesbury devolved to his son, William1 Carpenter of Providence, who deeded it to sister Frideswide in 1671. Richard Carpenter of Amesbury was probably a tradesman, perhaps a carpenter like son William.

There is no known connection between the Amesbury Carpenters and the Somerset locations of Nettlecomb and Ilchester. The latter place was the home of Elizabeth Arnold, eventual wife of William1 Carpenter of Providence, but they married at Providence.

For source citations and additional details, see the forthcoming sketch of RichardA Carpenter of Amesbury, which will be accessible via a webpage of links to recent sketches and journal articlespertaining to the Carpenters of Providence and of Rehoboth, Massachusetts. A detailed sketch of William1 Carpenter of Providence is already linked to that page.GeneZub (talk) 01:15, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Major rewrite[edit]

I did a complete rewrite of this article. The correction comments below were dead on. Corrections to what I wrote still need to be verified and reviewed.

Cleanup of rewrite[edit]

Gene Z. did an excellent job of cleanup of my cleanup. He removed cites that have not been confirmed or seen by either of us. John R. Carpenter Jrcrin001 (talk) 06:50, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hopefully the effort made is self evident for making the article more wikified.
