Name[edit]

Career[edit]

Recent edits make it sound like he's retired or out of the league. He was cut from a team and is currently suspended, but his career is not over. The video does NOT show rice "punching" Palmer. The video is not clear and it is not discernible whether he is trying to push her away or hitting her. The video does not show any actual contact between Ray's hand and his fiance.

I'm not sure what your point is 174.23.184.102. Although in slow motion the video is a little clearer, it's immaterial whether he pushed her or punched her. He still assaulted her and knocked her out. Now that the initial rush is over, let's do a better job of writing an encyclopedia article. I suggest rewriting the lead section as follows.

Raymell Mourice "Ray" Rice (born January 22, 1987) is a professional American football running back. He played college football for Rutgers University and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He is ranked as the Ravens' second all-time leading rusher behind Jamal Lewis (7,801) with 5,940 yards, and is also second in rushing attempts (1,273) and rushing touchdowns (37), and third in combined touchdowns (43).
Rice was arrested and subsequently indicted for third-degree aggravated assault on March 27, 2014, relating to an incident where he punched his girlfriend in the face.[1] The blow knocked her unconscious.[2] The incident became a prominent controversy after TMZ released a video of the encounter. Rice's contract was terminated by the Ravens on September 8, 2014, following the release of additional video footage of the incident, and he was indefinitely suspended from play by the National Football League. The case has led to an NFL policy change regarding how it handles domestic violence cases.

This version more closely follows the development of events as reported by the sources. It keeps the career in the first paragraph and the controversy in the second paragraph, which follows the style established by other WP articles about other athletes who have become embroiled in major scandals. The only edit I would make is unless and until he gets hired by another team it should read "Raymell Mourice "Ray" Rice (born January 22, 1987) was a professional American football running back." on the first sentence. Free agent vs indef suspended[edit]

There's been some edit-warring about whether to refer to Rice as a free agent or as indefinitely suspended in the lede and in the infobox. Is there a chance a consensus can be reached here? Are "free agent" and "indefinitely suspended" mutually exclusive - could both be listed? What do reliable sources say? Cheers, Dawn Bard (talk) 18:38, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think we've achieved some kind of understanding by maintaining the indefinite suspension in the opening paragraph, but showing "free agent" in the infobox, as other sports players in similar circumstances have historically been listed as free agents. Personally, I think this whole issue is between Mr. and Mrs. Rice, however there was a video of their domestic altercation which is quite impactful. Had there been a video of one of Michael Vick's dogs getting mauled, he probably would've been in worse trouble than he was. Anyway, my point is that "free agent" in the opening paragraph does not at all accurately reflect Ray Rice's current status or future as an NFL player. This makes sense to me; with the suspension mentioned in the very first sentence, there's no appearance of whitewashing in my opinion, and from what I've read so far, "free agent" is accurate, however unlikely it is that he'll play again. Who knows, maybe he'll end up in Canada. Unlikely, but Ochocinco is a Montréal Alouette at the moment, so it's perhaps not entirely impossible. My point is just that he'd be considered a free agent by the CFL. (It goes without saying that more discussion, dissenting opinions, etc., are still welcome.) The title "free agent" misinforms readers. He is currently "indefinitely suspended" from the NFL. Let's use that title rather than "free agent" unless he decides to play elsewhere. What do reliable sources claim him to be? If sources call him a "free agent" then I would support using that title; otherwise let's go with "indefinitely suspended". Who was arrested?[edit]

One paragraph starts off saying that both the man and his fiancee were arrested. But there is no more mention of the woman's being arrested. Why is that? Were charges against her dropped? I think police can arrest you without pressing charges. Like if 2 guys are fighting they arrest both until they sort out who started kt and press charges against him and let the other go. Last year played (2013/2014)[edit]

So since there has been long term edit warring (over time) regarding the NFL year that should appear in the infobox, I ask that we come to an agreement. 2013 was the last season he played active, as he didn't play at all during the 2014 season, unless you count the preseason. So what I'm asking is when do we consider the NFL season to "start"? (legally, it starts the day of free agency, but that wouldn't work here). Concussion[edit]

Has Ray ever been concussed? Year in image caption[edit]

So user Rutgersfan1 (talk · contribs) continues to remove the year in the infobox image caption, simply because he doesn't like it. It has always been consensus to add the year (when known) to avoid any disambiguity. He has been warned by other editors, including myself, but refuses to comment on it. (Besides his badly written attempts on his talk page)

Does anybody object to having the year mentioned or not? Other NFL player articles have always had it written that way, which is why I keep reverting the edits, when normally I wouldn't be bothered over something so trivial.
