Border Communities[edit]

Torrey Highlands is a community nicknamed by a developer, it is not a recognized community by the city of san diego, source. The threshold for inclusion in wikipedia is verifiability, not truth, so as long as the city of san diego has the borders of Rancho Penasquitos and Carmel Valley touching, the wikipedia should reflect it as such. —Ocatecir ^Talk 02:20, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your point is valid if you look only at the San Diego Neighborhoods map. However, the city's planning department also recognizes different communities, which includes Torrey Highlands. There are other examples in the city where the neighborhoods map is different than the communities map. Then the argument comes down to what unit should wikipedia use, neighborhoods or communities. It should be neighborhoods as the communities are too small and are often based on single developments. In order to have a clearer, more concise encyclopedia the article should list names those seeking information might be familiar with, and most refer to the name of the larger nighborhood, whether in day to day conversation or when referenced in the San Diego Union Tribune. I have lived in Penasquitos for 22 years and have never heard of Del Mar Mesa or Torrey Hills. While this isn't a valid reason for exclusion, it is anecdotal and shows that such names aren't part of the local vernacular. —Ocatecir ^Talk 03:30, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No one will argue that these areas are still very new, and not well known. But they are rapidly growing areas. The City Council District 1 map also acknowledges the newer names for these areas. I see no reason not to use the newer names. Wikipedia should educate folks with the correct, current names as the city has designated them. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PQMark (talk • contribs) 04:33, 27 February 2007.

City Council District Neighborhoods map, as well as the San Diego Police Department recognizes Torrey Highlands as a neighborhood. The City Council neighborhoods map that does not show Torrey Highlands, has been on that web site for a long time and Torrey Highlands is a fairly new community, so the reason it is not on the map is likly because the map is outdated.

In response to "I have lived in Penasquitos for 22 years and have never heard of Del Mar Mesa or Torrey Hills", I lived in Torrey Highlands and attended Westview high for one year. I never herd anyone call Torrey Highlands Penasquitos or any other name. There is even a newspaper called Torrey Highlands (although it is a very small newspaper) and I know from experience that most people who live in Torrey Highlands call it Torrey Highlands (that is what realtors call it also), but even if they did not, it is still recognized as a neighborhood on multiple government web sites.

In response to "most refer to the name of the larger nighborhood, whether in day to day conversation or when referenced in the San Diego Union Tribune", this is not true, check out these Union Tribune articles: [1] that directly refers to a fire happing in Torrey Highlands, [2] refers to a resident as being from Torrey Highlands, [3] that states "In the past 10 years, communities to gain official recognition were in the northern part of the city. They are Del Mar Mesa, Torrey Highlands, Pacific Highland Ranch and Black Mountain Ranch." (while this states it is a community, according the San Diego City Council it is a neghborhood)

Therefore, Westview should be moved to the Torrey Highlands article (when created) and it should not be on this page. Just because one outdated web site does not show it, does not mean it does not exist. Also, I added bordered to the west by Torrey Highlands. I had put Torrey Highlands on there before, but it was taken off. Just to make sure it is not taken off again. This is directly from The City of San Diego: Torrey Highlands Community Profile "Torrey Highlands encompasses 1,134 acres and is west of Rancho Peñasquitos." -ChristopherMannMcKay 03:49, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
