League[edit]

3 league Rancho Las Juntas A league is a measure of length. Most readers don't remember that a league equals three miles (does it?) without looking it up. Is this a paraphrase of a document?--Wetman (talk) 20:02, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the league terminology comes from the Mexican land grant documents (including US Supreme Court documents). The grants were measured in Spanish "leagues" which meant "square leagues" with 1 league being about 9 square miles (3 miles by 3 miles) or about 4400 acres. The grants were very imprecise, and "converting" them would imply too much precision. But I think we can add "square" to show they are area measurements. The patented areas were surveyed and measured in acres, which are converted.Emargie (talk) 20:56, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
