Marriage[edit]

Dear colleagues,
Sources contradict each other on the details of Ahmad's marriage. Almost all of them agree she was married at some point, but then divorced; however the Frankfurter Allgemeine article, which tends to be the most detailed and reliable source, says she was only engaged and the wedding never took place (there was only an 'engagement party' in Syria). The sources also disagree what her age was at the time (17 according to Cheek Magazine, 19 according to Frankfurter and Radio France Internationale English, 20 according to Die Welt), and what the reason for the divorce was (disagreement on whether to settle in Syria or Saudi Arabia according to Frankfurter, abusive husband according to RFI English, abusive parents-in-law according to Die Welt, which also claimed the marriage was - at least initially - a happy one for Ahmad with a gentle husband). None state how long this purported marriage lasted, nor the age at which she got divorced (she moved back in with her parents afterwards and pursued further education); the Frankfurter is the only one claiming she rejected 3 more Saudi suitors in subsequent years.

I have been unable to reconcile these contradicting claims. I went through all sources I could find and there is no apparent consistent narrative to be constructed around this episode of her life. It is obvious that this has had a massive impact on how her views of women in religion and society evolved, so it would be worth finding out how everything really happened. I hope someone else is able to resolve this question in the future. Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 10:17, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am wondering whether this might be a deliberate attempt by Ahmad to obfuscate an area of her life in order to protect her identity, by giving different information to different media sources in order to make her identification difficult. It's worth considering, given that she has adopted a pseudonym under which to live in Germany. Mramoeba (talk) 18:36, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
