Jumping Rules[edit]

Does anyone know the precise rules of this game? The jumping rules on the wiki page seems concise enough, but on this implementation: http://martijn.van.steenbergen.nl/projects/quoridor/

the jumping rules seems to be like this: if the square opposing you is not blocked (by wall or board edge) you are allowed to jump to the places marked O:

Key: Y = your piece H = her piece O = valid move X = invalid move B = blocked square

X O X
Y H O
X O X

If, however, the opposite square is blocked (by the letter B), the following jumps are valid:

O O X
Y H B
O O X

The jumping rules in the Wiki seem to imply that only moving to the opposite square is legal if this square is vacant:

Y H O

Does my diagrams make sense, and should the jumping rules here be clarified? --Gauteamus (talk) 19:46, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the jumping rule is like this: If blocked,

X O X
Y H B
X O X

otherwise,

Y H O

Notation[edit]

There is no reference given for the notation. Besides the fact that the notation is not a part of the rules given by the game, it is not a very nice notation. The notation that should be used is the one in Glendenning's thesis (the one in the link at the bottom).

Update: I changed the notation, seeing as there were no outcries of protest. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 153.106.71.29 (talk) 15:24, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redoing the Notation and Strategies sections[edit]

There is a new Quoridor site. First they have proposed an official notation. [1] This would call for some updating of the notation throughout the page, especially the openings under the Strategy section. Second, some of the comments in the strategy section are either incomplete or incorrect. I'm planning on redoing both of these sections. I wanted to see if anyone is out there watching this page or interested in this particular topic. I will probably post revisions within the week. Uncertainty about authorship of Blockade[edit]

IP user User:5.48.222.119 put some raw links on the page that imply that Blockade (on which Quoridor was based) was also called Cul-de-sac and was created by Philip Slater. I have no idea what to make of this, but the raw links probably don't belong on the main page, so I'll paste them here for discussion.

Rectification: Philip Slater designed, created and edited the game Blockade, in 1975.

Computer research on Quoridor[edit]

There are some quoridor playing computer agents: I cannot decide whether if I should add them.
