April 27[edit]

Is April 27 'Freedom Day' and also Flag Day ? The current design of the Flag of South Africa was adopted on April 27, 1994. -- PFHLai 03:08, 2005 Mar 22 (UTC)

Independence Day[edit]

Is Independence Day on May 31 a holiday in South Africa ? It's not listed. -- PFHLai 07:26, 2005 May 25 (UTC)

It was replaced by "Freedom day" in 1994.The majority of South Africans quite understandably attach no positive sentiments to Independence (1910) or the establishment of the (first) Republic in 1961. If anything it made life worse for them. Roger (talk) 19:31, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Afrikaans?[edit]

Why are the Afrikaans names listed here? Why not any other South African language? I suggest linking to the Afrikaans wikipedia article rather than trying to make the article multilingual in the English wikipedia. Greenman 09:19, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Once-off holidays[edit]

If you're recording all the once-off public holidays that have occurred over the years, the 1994, 1999, and 2004 general elections, the 2000 and 2005 municipal elections were also public holidays. There have also been once-off holidays for events such as coronations and royal funerals (pre-1961), and possibly also inaugurations of state presidents (1961-89). Citation overkill[edit]

Is it really necessary to have nine references strung together one after the other in the "Religious public holidays" section? I think they could be trimmed a bit and also spread around in the section to support different statements. See WP:CITEKILL for guidance on how to deal with the problem. Ouch! Hope you had adequate backups.
What do you think of selecting one or two of the news articles about the religious holidays dispute to return them to the article? As it is this page relies completely on primary sources - we need some secondary sources to properly sustain notability - show that the issue has come to the notice of the general public rather than being just a dispute within a couple of committee rooms. Have any churches or the SACC issued any statements about the issue? On the other hand we must also be careful not blow it up bigger than it really is.

Thanks Roger, I have all my data thank goodness except for my Internet bookmarks which are gone.
There is still one news report left from yesterday quoting ACDP. The other news reports basically duplicated everything the official sources had summarized in one place. It's also not over yet. If anything comes of it I am sure we will hear more about it in the news.
