Editing this page[edit]

In order to make this page more effective and more educational for the readers, I plan on making many changes and additions to it. First of all, I plan to change the title of the page itself to "Sex Work in Nepal." The reason for this change is to better present my argument towards voluntary sex work in this specific region. Prostitution most always refers to the concept of sex work against the will of the workers, so by changing this name, I'm building the framework for the rest of my Wiki article. I plan on bringing in some different points that will tackle the issue of prostitution vs. sex work in this specific region. There is a huge debate in this issue, and in order to better distinguish between sex work and involuntary trafficking, I will link this page to the current "Human Trafficking in Nepal" page found in Wikipedia. I will also bring in the causes for the sex work and the many effects that it brings in different parts of life in Nepal, both personally, and nationally. The purpose for my edit is to expand the argument of sex work within Nepal. I wish to present the other side of the sex work that goes on within this region--that is, the voluntary side--in hopes of educating the readers of the true state in which Nepal lies in terms of this issue. -128.42.223.234 (talk) 06:20, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved this page back to "Prostitution in Nepal" primarily to conform with the naming convention at Category:Prostitution by country. I can see the argument for not using the word prostitution, as the word is going through a dysphemism cycle and has been co-opted and sometimes misused, but I don't agree that it "most always refers to the concept of sex work against the will of the workers". Regardless, I think the article can retain many of the changes, including discussion of voluntary sex work. Gobōnobo + c 16:18, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions[edit]

I really like the topic of this Wikipedia article. It goes into the atrocities being committed in Nepal; however, I think you can go further. Add more statistics and data that further emphasize how horrible sex work and prostitution is. My main concern is this page does not have enough citations. In the sections titled "Short-Term Consequences," "Loss of Human Rights," and "Government Policies," there are absolutely no citations. In order to avoid getting this article taken down, please add citations as soon as possible. Also, try to add as many links (such as sex work) to other Wikipedia pages as much as possible. In the introduction, put the bolded section "Sex Work in Nepal" near the beginning of the article. In the sentence in the introduction starting with "prostitution," do not use the word "imply" twice. Also, in the intro, I do not think it's necessary to differentiate between sex work and prostitution. I feel like you go into too much detail about where people go for sex work in the introduction as well; keep the introduction as short and concise so people continue reading the article. Finally, in the intro, do not use the phrasing "this article hopes to..." Add a citation for the Human Development Index figure. Also have a citation for "UNAIDS estimates that 70,000 people were living with HIV at the end of 2007." Finally, I find this sentence to be awkward under "Compromised Security" - "Human trafficking of women and girls to India is a major problem which has made international news." Overall, I really like the topic, but work on content, citations, and grammar. -Stnicks007 (talk) 03:19, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Stnicks007[reply]

More suggestions[edit]

Natasha, I really enjoyed reading your article! The content clarified the term (as opposed to sex trafficking) and explored the issue from various angles. Most of the comments I have are small (grammatical) or ask for a slight word change, but the content was great.

  • I would change “These women feel empowered by the work that they do” to ‘These women may feel empowered’, as some people may find this offensive.

The same goes for “ In the short-term, going into the sex industry is a logical solution, especially since the money that many of these sex workers make can go towards the improvement of their families.” I would rephrase and say it would seem like a logical solution. I’m pretty sure what you mean will come across to the reader, but just in case. -Same for “Although some women go into the sex industry voluntarily, they end up being taken into the larger sex trafficking scene to India and surrounding áreas”

  • “sex workers run a risk of being abused sexually against their will”. Change to run the risk.
  • Confusing sentence structure: If sex workers were to challenge the authority of these officials, even if with their own bodies, they are running the risk of being punished within the community and even the law.
  • ”Authorities and laws trying to stop true slaver”. Change to ‘the true slaver. -Njeri Muturi (talk) 04:22, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
