Destruction of an Oak Grove[edit]

By what means could one man destroy a grove of mature oaks? It doesn't seem feasible that using an axe could do that. It would be extremely labor intensive. Oak is a rather hard wood e.g., Northern Red Oak has a hardness of 1290 on the Janka scale, White Oak is 1360. (Compare with White Pine, which is much softer, and rated at 380).

Slash and burn technique can kill mature trees but the process might take weeks or months.

There is an account that states that it was forbidden to touch a sacred oak and Adalbert made the mistake of doing so, which carried a penalty of death. Musicwriter (talk) 20:51, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
