International Trips[edit]

I think we should not mention that LBJ was the first president to travel aboard a foreign leader's jet. According to The Los Angeles Times, he was the first American president to travel aboard a foreign leader's jet when he traveled with Lester Pearson on his Canadian Air Force jet from Malmstrom Air Force Base to Vancouver during his first foreign trip, in 1964. But let's not mention it for now. Other presidents didn't travel aboard a foreign leader's jet before LBJ did in 1964. SnoopyAndCharlieBrown202070 (talk) 12:30, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That trivial factoid is definitely not noteworthy. It seems kind of silly to bring up something not in the article which no one is suggesting be added, just to state your temporary opposition to it being added. Drdpw (talk) 13:36, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Shastri Visit Canceled[edit]

Johnson had postponed a trip by Shastri to the U.S., not canceled it. Shastri was due to visit the U.S. at the time of his passing. SnoopyAndCharlieBrown202070 (talk) 16:12, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The source states that visits by Shastri and Ayub Khan of Pakistan were cancelled after Khan travelled to China in March 1965. I added a clause to the relevant sentence in the article for clarification. Drdpw (talk) 17:03, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. But Johnson would eventually meet with Ayub Khan during his round the world trip. On Shastri, he passed away before he could come to the U.S.; Indira Gandhi came to the U.S. SnoopyAndCharlieBrown202070 (talk) 17:18, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A sentence could certainly be added stating that LBJ later met with Khan and with Shastri's successor, Indira Gandhi. Did anything noteworthy come out of either of those later meetings? Drdpw (talk) 17:34, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

International Trips[edit]

Can we add details that Johnson never traveled abroad between the time he assumed the presidency following the Kennedy assassination until Hubert Humphrey was elected vice president. The AP reporter who was in the motorcade when Kennedy was assassinated, Jack Bell, mentioned this in his account of LBJ's first year in office, The Johnson Treatment, that foreign leaders would have to come to Washington or his Texas ranch. His only foreign visit during that period was when he implemented the Columbia River Treaty with Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson in Vancouver. I don't think we need to mention that LBJ didn't travel abroad (aside from Vancouver, BC) until 3 years into his presidency. In general, presidents didn't travel abroad all that much in those days. I also don't think we should conjecture about why LBJ didn't travel abroad during his first years in office (the domestic political circumstances in 1964-65, LBJ's leadership/governing style, his health, the general belief in Washington that world leaders should come here as we're "the king of the mountain", were all factors). No, unless there's a scholarly source stating that Johnson didn't like (believe it worth while) to travel abroad because of 'x' or stating why he didn't do so for the first part of his presidency, it is enough to mention what he did do and where he in fact did go.
