Untitled[edit]

This article is almost entirely completely copied from the Catholic Encyclopedia cf http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08421b.htm and is therefore plagiarism and needs to be rewritten (Boojie (talk) 07:47, 2 March 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Birth date[edit]

Is his birth date indeed known as 470 or is it unknown? JMK (talk) 05:57, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Papal Name?[edit]

Can someone provide a source for the claim that John II adopted a papal name that was different from his original name? The Liber Pontificalis merely calls him "IOHANNES qui et Mercurius" ("John also known as Mercurius"). The claim that he changed his name appears in the Catholic Encyclopedia without source. In the same article it is mentioned that the Basilica di San Clemente has memorials referring to him as "Johannes surnamed Mercurius". The Dictionary of Christian Biography and Literature to the End of the Sixth Century does not mention a name change. It merely refers to him as "Joannes II. (called Mercurius)". To me this all sounds like his name had always been John. Random person no 362478479 (talk) 18:25, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sainthood[edit]

@GoodDay I reverted your addition of Saint to the honorific. I find no reliable source that refers to John II as a saint. I also removed List of catholic saints (which had already been there) from See also. If you have a source feel free to re-add the information with a reference. No problem. The see also list mislead me. GoodDay (talk) 23:33, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I assumed. I don't know why someone added that, I checked and John II is not on the list there. Random person no 362478479 (talk) 23:35, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
