Emery oil[edit]

I have heard of something called "Emery Oil" (this spelling is correct) which I believe is a mixture of several polyalphaolefins. Can anyone verify this, give source of information, history (e.g. why it is called Emery), etc?

Too "jargony"[edit]

...and poorly organized. Sounds like it was written by payed, bored chemists & industry insiders. Luckily the next two Google hits are well written, and interesting, such as http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-polyolefin.htm.

Doug, Sorry to hear of your disappointment. Feel free to improve the quality by coming up to speed on the topic and editing appropriately. Please understand this page is under wikimedia polymers (For that matter I might recommend moving it to engineering.) For the record I know of very few people in favor of bad organization and wording. I have tried to add some insight to the first few lines of the properties section. If your expectation is for it to read like a magazine article, we will have to agree to disagree. Here we have properties-crystallinity-what controls crystallinity. It gives the real deal. By all means wordsmith it to make it more understandable to the lay reader. Please respect the chemistry and physics behind it though.Crosslink (talk) 20:44, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Add part about synthesis[edit]

I'm still a bit new to this(wikipedia editing), but anyone think it's a good idea to add a part about the synthesis of polyolefins using catalysts? Catalysis seems like a very important part of polyolefin synthesis yet it's not mentioned in this page.Chemaki (talk) 07:08, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to know what are the basic feed stocks (raw materials) used in making (synthesizing) synthetic motor oil. This page and the several links I followed do not readily provide this information. Even though I did take organic chemistry and am able to understand the carbon bonding and the combination of organic chemicals used to make the oil this is not the information I was looking for. I am sure that if I had endless hours to research this I could find the answers. However, I believe that there are other people as well that would simply like to know what are the raw resources that go into making synthetic motor oil.
