Planter Class[edit]

I saw the discussion about slaveholder as a category and the decision to delete it as a category.

I think it makes more sense to create a category for "planter", as defined by historians for the United States - one who owned 20 or more slaves. This term has been a means by which historians define wealth and political and social class in the antebellum South. I've seen this number and term referred to in most mid-late 20th c. academic writing about slavery and the planter class, but don't know precisely when historians came to that consensus. Whites who were planters were a distinct minority in the population, but they held most of the political and social power in the South. Because of the 3/5 rule to count slave population toward Southern states' Congressional representation, planters also held a disproportionate share of power at the national level. --Parkwells 23:45, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

==[edit]

There is a reference to a planter being a "protestant colonizer". I'm wondering if this is in reference to Ireland and if anyone knows enough to create and article for the planter irish? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alleyward (talkcontribs) 23:20, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Planters"[edit]

There is a discussion at Talk:Planters#Requested move 17 February 2020 about moving an article about a company and redirecting the plural here. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:48, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
