Pierre Berton (playwright)[edit]

There is also a 19th century French playwright by this name ([1], [2]). Any suggestion on how to sort out the disambiguation? I'm guessing the Canadian Pierre Berton is the more famous, so we should create a Pierre Berton (disambiguation) page, link to it here, and leave the current article where it is. -- Jmabel | Talk 01:48, Feb 28, 2005 (UTC)

innaccuracies[edit]

It should be mentioned that many of the figures he cites in some of his books (Marching as to War and Vimy come to mind) are not the same as other major historians. Just thought I'd point it out.

Cam - Pierre never claimed to be an academic historian; his histories are popular histories.

first of all, let's learn spelling - inaccuracies, single n. secondly, let's take the meaning of inaccuracy. not certain what you mean by "many of the figures . . . are not the same as other major historians." do you mean the interpretation of their character/deeds/etc? or do you mean that col. so-and-so is not mentioned by historian A and thus suspect? whatever you mean should be laid out in clear, unambiguous english, supported by facts. am looking forward to your response.

Berton said something to the effect of: Toronto does the least with the most, while Regina does the most with the least. I included this in the Saskatchewan in popular culture article but have not been able to find an appropriate source. Does anyone know from where this quote comes? Fired from Maclean's?[edit]

I just read this, and thought it could be included in the article: "When journalist Pierre Berton wronte in Maclean's that he hoped his daughters would have sex in a comfortable bed rather than the back seat of a car, the resulting backlash led to his being fired." -- Bora Laskin: Bringing Law to Life, Philip Girard, 2005,p.350. Lack of reliable references[edit]

I've demoted this article to a start category, because it has minimal, reliable references. I provided one reliable inline citation, on his birthplace. It is from his two-page obituary from the Toronto Star newspaper on 1 December 2004. Most of the rest of the article is unreferenced, but could easily be rectified through such free resources as the Toronto Public Library's Proquest database that contains both the Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail newspaper archives online. I'm busy with other articles right now, but someone should do some research and add proper inline citations where needed, which is most of the article. "Laird of Kleinburg"[edit]

Berton used to have this affectionate journalistic nickname. However when I check the web for it, the only reference I find is a film review that I had forgotten writing myself in 1999. Does someone have a citation for that nickname?

The Ubyssey[edit]

Hey, I notice some one wants a citation for Berton's time at the Ubyssey. Cremation[edit]

Timeline[edit]

I edited the timeline section for various dates that were incorrect and for incorrect grammar. Why no mention of Pierre Berton's wife, five children, family life, professional colleagues?[edit]

Pierre Burton was forthcoming about such details, including the arrival at their family home of Vicki Gabereau when she moved from Vancouver to Toronto. There was no hiding of such matters and there is plenty of published discussion of them. Masalai (talk) 22:54, 28 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bibliography[edit]

Two of the books on the bibliography do not appear in any library catalogue that I have searched, nor do they appeard on used book sites. The two books are: 1956 Illustrated Heritage of Canada: The Beginning Years, 1860–1870 1957 Illustrated Heritage of Canada: The Seventies The only reference to these books is at McMaster Archives, where they show up, undated, as photocopies. i remember talking to pierre about these - part of a series that was to cover canadian history somewhat like reader's digest compendia on various topics. he was in an office on ?simcoe street? downtown(just west of university) at the time, so it might have been 1965-66 70.31.166.89 (talk) 21:25, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Page structure[edit]

The article has many sections on the same level ranging from fairly specific and isolated careersteps (Military career, War correspondent in Korea, Editor in Toronto) to some much broader 'roles' Berton had (Public intellectual, Historian). I think it would benefit from some proper re-ordering but I did not feel comfortable in changing it too much myself. Instead I only moved the 'Decline' part to 'Public intellectual' as this seems to be closely related to that role. --MichielN (talk) 13:05, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
