PAC05 picture[edit]

I'm afraid I have to agree with Pigsonthewing. That photograph is simply terrible. You can barely see Phil's face compared with the bright reflection of the sign and the back of some guy's head. And the only thing in focus is the guy's head. Phil looks rather blurry and ghoulish. It's certainly not a flattering picture by any standard. Kaldari 19:32, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kaldari: I was hoping you would like this one, although it did come out a bit dark too, I must admit. The reason I put the other one up was to show with the text associated Phils oic at the podium, interest in accelerator/ particle technology of which he does have his degree in Physics from NY. His speech was extraordinary to over 2,500 participants from around the world here. I sat in the second row, and managed to chat and get a pic with him. birthplace[edit]

He grew up in Shortsville, NY, but was born where you say he was, as far as I know. His father's family went to White Plains years later, then to Cleveland, then Ft. Lauderdale, where Phil's father lives still. I don't believe Phil & his mother's family ever moved down to Fl. ReignMan 23:15, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One source I found states that Bredesen was born in Ocean Park, New Jersey ([1]), but Rambot doesn't seem to think that town exists. Any insight? — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 01:43, Jan. 15, 2006

It looks like Ocean Park might be another name for Ocean Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. My only evidence so far though is that this page links "Ocean Park, New Jersey" to an article about Ocean Township.

I haven't been able to find anything on the internet relating Ocean Park to Oceanport (other than Phil Bredesen). My guess is someone misheard Oceanport as Ocean Park and the error propogated from there. Kaldari 07:21, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Primary loss[edit]

I think that the Democratic primary for the former Boner 5th district seat was later in 1987, not 1988 as stated in the article. (Maybe the author has the date of the general election in mind.) Does anyone have a reference for this right off hand? Rlquall 13:20, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Latest changes?[edit]

Bias[edit]

This page is certainly biased leftwardly, as I give it a —15 on my scale of bias, with —500 being MoveOn.org and +500 being Sinclair Broadcasting, more or less. Bring this down to a —2 or less. Kailyn Mlad 19:40, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

An article without references is almost useless, and this one is much too highly pro-Bredesen. His ending of TennCare was callous, and betrayed the trust of many of his voters, since he ran, in 2002, promising to fix TennCare, not end it. Now, thousands of Tennesseans have no health care. In addition, he has managed the state lottery, which is of questionable good.

There's a lot of negative things that can be said about Phil Bredesen's governorship, and this article lists none of them. From TennCare to parental notification of underage abortions to failing schools to incomplete and poorly managed infrastructure projects, he is perhaps the most overrated governor in the United States. Our state's budgets may be balanced, but it's only because critical programs are woefully underfunded, and Bredesen is unwilling to implement a state income tax, more out of political cowardice than out of any actual conviction or principle. Meanwhile, Tennessee suffers having one of the highest sales taxes in the country, which disproportionally affects the poor and makes Tennessee a less attractive place to shop, hurting businesses. Right now, during the economic recession, with people spending less money, the state is experiencing budget shortfalls, making a bad situation even worse. This article needs to reflect the truth about Phil Bredesen and his terrible leadership; otherwise it's worth little more than the propaganda on his website. Material Lifted From Tennessee Blue Book[edit]

It's worth noting that a great deal of the information in the section on his governorship is taken almost directly from his entry in the Tennessee Blue Book 2007-8. In most instances, it's not verbatim copying – the language has definitely been tweaked – but even a quick comparison reveals that, at the very least, citation is in order. Declaration of intent[edit]

Phil Bredesen, through contacts at the University of Tennessee, expressed an interest in an independent revision and expansion of his Wikipedia entry. Toward that end he provided Publius6575 with additional biographical details and images. In doing so Bredesen emphasized that he did not want the editors to be accountable to him; objectivity is the goal for all involved parties. All Publius 6575 edits will be made under this user name, so contributions can be tracked and vetted more easily. Governor's state portrait[edit]

In accordance with the Wikimedia guidelines, I'm just noting that there has been a recent change to the governor's portrait. Through OTRS, permission from the governor was granted to release the image into the public domain. Using undo[edit]

There is one editor in particular who is clicking undo rather than verifying information or improving sections that are accurate. Please, use the 'undo' option with discretion. We don't need an "edit war." Rather than undoing a revision earlier, I went back and revised article and then same editor undid again. Let's be helpful instead of needless back and forth. Political positions[edit]

Most politicians have sections that are broken down into categories. As the article is improved, please, help to organize the section. Also, instead of undoing examples or labeling them, please, use cited sources and examples. Any public figure, politician or otherwise, could say they are pro XYZ or anti XYZ. That should be noted, but, if they have a legislative, executive, or judicial record, it is important to add examples to illustrate how they have pursued public policy positions. One example here that has been approached with contention by some is Governor Bredesen's position on guns. The NRA gave him an 'A' rating as Governor. As a candidate for Senate, he has a 'D' rating. Why? How did the NRA make that decision during those respective periods of Bredesen's career? Provide examples. Otherwise, too much weight is being given to a special interest rating without further identifying specific policy actions undertaken by the Governor. Abortion is another example. Right now, the article simply says Bredesen is pro-choice. If that is the only statement on record, then that is all that is available with a proper source to cite. However, we could improve the article by finding examples of particularities where Bredesen may have signed a bill, or advocated for a policy change, or said how he will vote. Does he consider Roe v. Wade to be a litmus test for judges? These are the kinds of questions that serious editors should ask and want to improve.SeminarianJohn (talk) 17:07, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
