Phaltan - Ruling family History[edit]

The is originated from Nimb Raj. I ( Naik )Nimbalkar. As The name is Nimb- Raja tells that he was the king of the region of Nimbal. Nimbal is small town near Vijapur (Karnataka – May be Bijapur).

After last king of the Parmaras (Rajput Dynasty of the Ujjain) – Mahalik Dev Ray Parmar there is little trace for his descendants who went in hiding to south India. This happened when Barbarous Allauddin Khilji ( Ruler of Delhi ) attacked Ujjain in around 1230 AD. Nimbalkar Claims themselves descendant of the Parmara ruler.

After this in 1275 Devgiri near Aurangabad (Maharashtra) perished by malik kafur. There was some resistance to muslim rulers by the New muslims. The great man Nimbraj was put against this resistance. He killed 10,000 new muslims and he was awarded the title ‘Raja’ – King of the region and he accepted Phaltan as his base. The muslim ruler was said to be descendant of Muhhammad tughlak.

The family proclaimed many times independence, even though they were subordinate to Vijapur muslim sultanat. The family members had been instrumental in Maharashtra - India politics since last 1000 years.

As first independence was proclaimed by Jagpala ( alias Vangpala or Vangoji) Naik Nimbalkar (Raja of Phaltan 1550 AD around) who was brother of grandmother of the great ‘Chatrapati Shivaji I’.

The second time the independence was proclaimed by Mudhoji Naik Nimbalkar the Father in law of ‘Chatrapati Shivaji I’ (Raja of Phaltan 1635 AD around).

The Family was so powerful in Maratha politics that the one of the descendant of the Family – Haibatrao Raje Nimbalkar - at the time of Shahu (The grand son of the great Shivaji I ) Joined the Nijams of the Hydrabad and played politics to get the Khandesh share to new Maratha rulers of DHAR and Badoda. (This was mungi shvgaon treaty).

The Family is very respected in maharashtra. Many descendants are still playing major role in Maharashtra Politics. Padmasinh Patil, who is from Nimbalkar had played major role Maharashtra Politics. Current scion of the Phaltan family holds a good position in Maharashtra Ministry. His name is Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar.

Vijay sinh Mohite Patil is son in law of Nimbalkars Current Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's Maternal Uncle is from Nimbalkar Family.

Was Phaltan Jagir????[edit]

As per my information Phaltan was never a Jagir to Satara. For satara king they always helped in the form of Military association, providing a fighting force. Most of the way Phaltan was independant.

Mughal in 1284 and 1291????[edit]

The Hindu ruling family was descended from Naik Nimbraj I Nimbalkar (1284-1291), a Maratha who received a grant from a Mughal emperor in the 14th century. The ruler had the title of Raja, or Naik Nimbalkar.

As per my knowledge I am doubtful about there was any Mughal Kingdom in this period in India!!!

Phaltan Ruler had title of Raje.

What is the title 'Naik'?

As per my knowledge this title goes way back 800 AD. The Naik was title to the Kings in the Era of KING Harshwardhan.

If we go in north India we may found that there were the titles like - NAIK, MUKADAM and KHUT.

History tells us that in the period of Alladin-khilji these family names were present as leaders of the society. NAIK is also very common in other community. specifically in southern India as NAYAK, and therefore Nimbalkar family applies Naik before Nimbalkar after Raje.This is the Prime title of the kingship before someone gave them the title of the 'Raje'.

misleading impression of the Naik Nimbalkar family.[edit]

The article relating to Phaltan says that members of the Naik Nimbalkar family still control all aspects of social life in Phaltan. This creates I feel a wrong and misleading impression in the mind of readers. Members of the Naik Nimbalkar family, have never tried to dominate or control any aspect of social life in Phaltan. It is true that they are active in politics, however they have never used any sort of political muscle to dominate Phaltan society. Indeed it would be against the values of liberalism and their belief in the process of democracy, which have always been predominant beliefs in the family. Therefore I would like to protest against such an insinuation.

According to my knowledge phaltan was independent from the beginning. Bajaji naik Nimbalkar was the first ruler of the phaltan and malojiraje naik Nimbalkar was the last. Nikhilhendre (talk) 15:21, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
