Assessment[edit]

This looks like a very nice article for a small unincorporated community. One thing that needs to be changed is the excessive number of external links within the article itself. Some of them should be turned into references. Some of the others should probably be eliminated completely as not fitting within the Wikipedia's external links policy. ^Blank ^Verse 11:07, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe "Petrol" was a local Native American indian word. But Mattole is. The Petro-currency and the word "Petrolia" come from the oil that was originally found there.

History[edit]

Earthquakes[edit]

According to the US Geological Survey, it seems there is always seismic activity off the coast near Petrolia. Do any of these earthquakes cause damage/injury in the area? Scientology[edit]

Why is there no mention of the Church of Scientology's reported base in Petrolia? The aerial symbols are clearly there (visible in Google Earth just west of the city and the "Church of Spiritual Technology Petrolia Vault") and there's a mention of it's existence on the Trementina Base page. I included a mention of the facility, but I don't see any symbols at 40°23′15.4″N 124°18′18.86″W / 40.387611°N 124.3052389°W, even on the Bing Maps which have the sharpest quality images. Ellin Beltz (talk) 00:05, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Changes today[edit]

I made several major changes to this article today:

reverted an edit by User:Asiaticus today because it was a statement unable to be found in the source document because the document is 404-no longer available online.
removed revision by User:Nevkitty which seems to be an attempt to promote a business which may or may not be in Petrolia. The business address and phone number of which are listed in Oakland, California.
checked all the citations in the article.
reworked the section on festivals and events which read as if it were written by a "booster."
removed a statement from the lead paragraph which was not borne out by following the link within the statement: "The Lost Coast is named because of its position on the rocky, treacherous coastline and King Range of mountains that isolate this area from mainland California and continue to leave the area almost completely undeveloped." Going to the Lost Coast page one reads "It was named the "Lost Coast" after the area experienced depopulation in the 1930s." That comment is cited to Gudde, Erwin G.; Bright, William (2004). California Place Names: The Origin and Etymology of Current Geographical Names (4th ed.). University of California Press. ISBN 978-0-520-24217-3.
removed the following sentence "There are festivals and other community events throughout the year near the Mattole, including Reggae on the River in Piercy, California; the Mad River Festival in Blue Lake, California; and the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale, California" because those festivals should be covered on the pages for those towns, not this town.
added the convert template for units of distance, area and temperature.
added citations to support the text wherever possible, or placed "citation needed" tags.
added the cited material about Walker Ranch.
added the photo of the Petrolia Oil wells and moved the skyline image to the Infobox.
updated the representative for this district from Mike Thompson to Jared Huffman.
