Requested move[edit]

This article has been renamed from FC Krylya Sovetov Samara to FC Krylia Sovetov Samara as the result of a move request.

The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was - consensus for move. Keith D (talk) 23:49, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Krylia, instead of Krylya. Official website, common English name. BanRay 00:27, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Move to FC Krylia Sovetov Samara - Although the club uses "Professional Football Club 'Krylia Sovetov' Samara" at the top of their official English-language website, the titlebar reads "FC 'Krylia Sovetov' Samara", and the website is copyrighted to "FC Krylia Sovetov Samara". – PeeJay 00:50, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment Agreed, I'll modify the rm if there are no objections BanRay 01:37, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Wikipedia:NC#Sports teams states that "In cases where there is no ambiguity whatsoever as to the official spelling of a club's name in English, the official name should be used; Tests for "no ambiguity": the club's official web site has an English-language section; and that name has been adopted at least by a significant section of the English-language media; and it is recognizable; and it is not easily confused with other clubs' names." Krylia has not been adopted by the media, as shown by zero hits on Google News (Krylya gets five). Also, the website repeatedly uses Krylya on other pages.[1][2].
Therefore, as stated by the policy, "In cases where there is some ambiguity as to the official spelling of a club's name in English, the name most commonly used by the English-language media should be used (as determined using the number of hits at Google News).", the article should be located at Krylya not Krylia due to its Google news hits. пﮟოьεԻ 57 01:07, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment But then we've got WP:RUS and Krylia is the correct transliteration from Russian. BanRay 10:09, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Eh? The policy states that я is transliterated as ya, which would give Krylya as well... пﮟოьεԻ 57 11:38, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Nah, that would make Kryliya in fact since "ия = iya", which is usually simplified as ia BanRay 11:46, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm transliterating it based on how it sounds, not how it looks since "ь" is usually omitted from transliteration (sometimes can be transliterated as '). Krylya makes Крылыа (sounds horribly Ukrainian). BanRay 12:06, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The closest you can get would be Kryliya, but that's too complicated and can be simplified as Krylia, so I'm opting for the latter version. It's also the most common way of tranliterating the word "Крылья", getting five times more google hits than Krylya Sovetov. BanRay 12:12, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, thanks for the explanation. From my experience with Hebrew, I know transliteration can be an arse, especially when there are "traditional" methods of doing it which are actually crap. пﮟოьεԻ 57 13:09, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • So true, the problem is that there are lots of exceptions that aren't covered by traditional rules. BanRay 14:40, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As suggested by Number 57, we should probably move the FC Krylya Sovetov-SOK to FC Krylia Sovetov-SOK as well, if we reach consensus on the KS Samara move, of course. So feel free to discuss this move below. BanRay 20:30, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
