The zodiac doesn't suit me!

Factual Inaccuracy

The Challenger space shuttle was not destroyed on re-entry, it was destroyed shortly after being launched as depicted in the Wikipedia article. Either the author means space shuttle Columbia which was destroyed on re-entry or the text has to be changed.

Celebrity list of the Ox

The celebrity list for the Ox sign is way, way too long. I feel I should be cut down to a size comparable to all the rest (Rat, Tiger, Dragon, etc etc). If anyone has objections please speak up. If nobody speaks up within the next few days I will shorten the list and take off the "wood Ox". "Metal Ox" etc etc and make the list one of Oxen, just like the rest. It's way too long and detailed. Well, you did a great job, but I do not think it was all that necessary. People would never bother to look around all that - in fact, people might be turned off by such a long list of which a lot of the names mentioned are virtually unknown (or just not significant enough) to the majority of people. The shorter lists like the ones found under the Rat, Dragon, Tiger and Monkey are ideal because they list notable celebrities from each sign without the elemential factor (which is just tiresome, especially to readers who have no clue what it is). I think this was covered before and most people actually thought that the celebrity lists should go. I want them to stay, but only in moderation. This is excessive and boring. I vote for making a new article, List of Celebrities Sign (chinese zodiac) - with a list of famous persons of all signs (separeted by sign/element), something like the List of games Daniel Leite 04:20, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Since no one protested and I agree with you, I boldly went ahead and created the Category Category:List_of_Celebrities_(Chinese_Zodiac) and the subcategories for each sign. I'm currently adding the categories to the current Year of the Dog celebrities (I will remove the section afterwards, replacing it with a link).

Now, it would be great if you and all the other regulars (Maestro, VeronicaPR, IrishPearl etc.) would each take a Zodiac Sign and do the same, since it would take ages to do this alone. Teshik 12:35, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Chinese Character

I thought the Chinese symbol for 'Year of the Ox' was 丑, as apposed to 牛, which just means 'Ox'. I could be wrong though. Could somebody please verify which is correct. Sadako No Deshi 18:54, 18 July 2006 (BST)

The character you supplied (chŏu) is the 2nd of the sequence of Earthly Branches (地支), part of the old chinese sexagesimal date system. It corresponds to 牛 (níu) positionally, but does not actually mean cow. In this case, both are correct, as both refer to the year of the Ox, but the former is more antiquated and not commonly used in speech, and is often used in conjunction with a Heavenly Stem (天干) character to indicate the year. For example, 2006 is 丙戌. A Chinese person born in the year of the Ox would say 我屬牛 and not 我屬丑. So the usages are different. Hope this helps.

However, an encyclopaedia shouldn't reflect a casual mode of speech. This is reflected in the naming of the article within the Japanese and Chinese wikipedia. In addition, Every year, the chinese events, and calendars, all use the traditional characters for the name. And this article should maintain some consistancy with the wikipedia of whose language we are arguing. Ice-Wolf 04:25, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Wrong expression

In the Vietnamese zodiac, the water buffalo occupies the position of the Ox. In the Gurung zodiac, the Ox is replaced by the Cow.

This is completely wrong. The second zodiac is 牛 (niú), which means Bovini, including ox and cow. --Yejianfei (talk) 01:53, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
