Overland Stage LineOverland Trail

  • Need a move over a redirect - I had previously setup redirects for Overland Trail to Overland Route, but further research has shown that Overland Trail is probably the right name for this article   CosmicPenguin (talkWP:WYOHelp!) 18:48, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Overland Trail" has other meanings, see page Overland Route. A disambig suffix is needed for the page Overland Stage Line's new name. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 20:04, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is somewhat confusing. There was an article with a history at Overland Trail until 11 Dec, when you redirected it (with an edit summary mentioning the Oregon Trail even though the article wasn't about the Oregon Trail primarily). You started this article on 8 Dec. Are they meant to be about the same thing or two different things? If the same, Overland Trail should be reinstated and you should edit that article directly with your changes and redirect Overland Stage Line to there. If they are two different things, Overland Trail should be reinstated and this article should remain as is. Station1 (talk) 23:31, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The original article was indeed primarily about the Oregon Trail/California Trail/Mormon Trail, a matter which is well covered in their respective articles. This article is about the more southernly route that was created as an alternate to the central route. I started the new article under Overland Stage Line but I later decided that Overland Trail was the far more commonly used name for the trail and in fact the trail was probably use in use for a few years prior to the start of the stage line. The problem is that "overland" is a reasonably overloaded term and has been misapplied to most of the emigrant trails, as well as a hand full of mail routes and other paths across the western United States, not to mention the world. Anthony's proposal is probably the most sane - Overland Trail (United States) is probably the best spot for this article, with Overland Trail remaining a redirect to the Overland Route disambig. OK, if you're saying the former article at Overland Trail was misapplying or misusing the name Overland Trail (which may well be - the article is basically unsourced) and therefore shouldn't exist, and that there was only one trail in the U.S. properly named the Overland Trail, I would support a rename. Actually, since this is probably the primary topic for the title Overland Trail (over the one in Yukon and the TV series) I would just overwrite the old article so its history is preserved, but if it's not primary Overland Trail (United States) is good. I cannot delete Overland Trail, as there is a considerable history, which seems to refer to some other route(?) - see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Overland_Trail&oldid=330789770. Therefore we need to know what name this old page should become/merged/etc. before this page can be renamed.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:48, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh, yes, I made a mess of it. I think that Station1 has the best idea. This article should replace the original content of Overland Trail. Can you do a histmerge? CosmicPenguin (talkWP:WYOHelp!) 00:26, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
